Scripture Reading Genesis 3 • Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" • The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, • but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' " • "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. • "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." • When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
Faith And Doubt
Genesis 3 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
I. Doubt God’s Word. The Serpent wanted Adam and Eve to doubt that God had either the ability or the will to communicate with them in meaningful ways.
2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' " 4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman.
II. Doubt God’s Power. The serpent wanted Adam and Eve to believe that when God says something will happen, it isn’t necessary so.
5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
III. Doubt God’s Character. The serpent wanted Adam and Eve to believe that God wanted something for them other than the best.
Doubt – believing that God can’t or won’t speak to us in meaningful ways. • Faith – believing that God can speak and that he has spoken to us through the Scriptures. • Doubt – believing that when God says something, it won’t happen. • Faith – believing that God has the power to accomplish whatever he says. • Doubt – believing that God is bad. • Faith – believing that God is infinitely Good, Infinitely Loving, Infinitely Wise, and Infinitely Generous
