  1. The Broad Prize for Urban Education San Diego Unified School District 2013 Finalist

  2. What is the Broad Prize? • $1 million award given annually the urban district in America that has made the greatest improvement in student achievement, particularly among low-income and minority students. • Four districts have been selected to be finalists! We are already a winner!

  3. What is the Broad Prize? • Winning district receives $500,000 in scholarships for its students. • Other 3 finalists receive $150,000 in college scholarships for graduating high school seniors.

  4. Four Finalists • San Diego Unified School District* • Corona-Norco Unified School District • Cumberland County Schools (NC) • Houston Independent School District (* First time any district in SD County has been selected as a finalist!)

  5. What did we do? Made progress narrowing the achievement gaps between: • Hispanic and African-American students and their district’s white students. • Hispanic and African-American students and their state’s white students.

  6. What did we do? • Outperformed peer districts that serve similar percentages of low income students in at least seven of nine comparisons (elementary, middle and high school reading, math, and science) and graduation rate.

  7. What is considered? • SAT, ACT and Advanced Placement participation rates and outcomes • Graduation rates • State assessments in reading, math and science • Per pupil expenditures and district size

  8. What’s next? • Teams of educational researchers and practitioners will conduct a three-day site visit in the district using a research-based rubric to gather qualitative information, interview district administrators, conduct focus groups with teachers and principals and observe classrooms.

  9. What’s next? • The research teams will also interview students, parents, community leaders, school board members and union representatives. • Communications Department will assist with media release forms for students who will be interviewed/filmed.

  11. How were the 6 sites selected? Demographic, geographic, and academic representation of the district: • 2 elementary, 2 middle, 2 high schools • 2 high performing, 2 low performing, 2 moderately performing • 3 economically disadvantaged

  12. Who will be interviewed? • Principals • Vice Principals • Teachers (selected randomly within area) • Counselors (selected randomly within area) • Classified Staff • Parents • Students

FOCUS: Student Achievement • San Diego Unified School District students outperform students in peer districts statewide. • In 2012, San Diego students performed better than students in other California districts that serve students with similar family incomes in elementary, middle and high school reading, math and science, according to The Broad Prize methodology. • Lowered the achievement gap in: • READING - Elementary, Middle and High • MATH - Elementary, Middle and High • SCIENCE - Science was recognized for greater achievement than any other district across California!

  14. When is the award? • The 2013 Broad Prize winner will be announced on Wednesday, September 25, at the Library of Congress in Washington DC.
