Thr3e’s Basic Plot Summary • Kevin Parson is the main character, a respectable young seminary student, who is driving in his car one day when he receives a phone call from a stranger identifying himself as Slater • Slater tells Kevin he has three minutes to confess his sin to the world, or his car will be blown up • Completely baffled, Kevin pulls his car off the side of the road and jumps out right before it explodes. • Kevin continues to receive untraceable phone calls from Slater, who gives Kevin riddles to help him figure out what sin Slater wants him to confess • Each time, Kevin is given a certain amount of time to solve the riddles before Slater inflicts damage; escalating from the car, to a bus, to buildings. • With the help of childhood friend Samantha, Kevin tries to solve the riddles, figure out what sin Slater is talking about, and who he is. • The novel culminates in the end when Slater has Kevin and Samantha locked in a cellar
Analytical Question: How does Dekker create a noteworthy character?
Excerpt • (Samantha speaking): If Jennifer was right, she really was Kevin. But that was impossible because Kevin sat on the floor, twenty feet away, rocking, deeply withdrawn, holding a red foot, bleeding from his left ear. Her cell phone lay in several pieces twenty feet away on the concrete where Slater had hurled it. That was real enough. Was it possible that Kevin had made her up? She looked at her hands--they seemed real, but she also knew how the mind worked. She also knew that Kevin was a prime candidate for multiple personality disorder
Analysis • It turns out that Kevin has multiple personality disorder. He is actually Slater, Slater is Kevin. We also find out that Samantha is part of Kevin’s personality. Samantha and Slater are imaginary parts of Slater’s mind. • The protagonist is the antagonist; the antagonist is the protagonist.
Analysis • Dekker’s method of revealing this mystery is unique because the reader discovers the answer as the characters discover the answer. • Dekker reveals the answer to you through the head of the main character. The reader figures it out as the characters themselves figure it out • He reveals the mystery through the character’s head--through the inside--not the outside.
Answer to my Question: • In Thr3e, Dekker creates a notable character in Kevin Parson. He is a unique character in that he is actually three different characters. He is the antagonist and the protagonist, but we don’t find that out until the end. • Dekker’s method of revealing this mystery is also unique; he shows you through the thoughts of the main character as he figures it out. • This question is crucial because Kevin’s character is the main point of the novel.
