  1. Pregnancy and Exercise • Pregnancy creates tremendous demands on a woman’s body. • For most women, the benefits of remaining active during pregnancy outweigh the risks. • Moderate intensity exercise improves maternal and fetal well-being. Improved CV Function Limited weight gain & BF Improved digestion Improved attitude and mental state Easier labor/reduced complications Faster recovery Better Fitness level

Exercise Prescription During Pregnancy • Joint laxity increases during pregnancy. • Use care with resistance exercise. • Avoid ballistic movements that can cause injury. • Be aware of body’s warning signs. • CP or Palpitations • Abdominal or pelvic Pain • Calf pain or swelling of ankles, hands or face • Acute illness • Decreased fetal movement • Vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy • Rest periods important • Hydration is important to prevent reduced fetal blood flow • Pregnancy increases calorie needs by 300 per day

  3. “Exercise in the supine position after the first TRImester can reduce fetal cardiac output, blood flow and adequacy of nutrients to the baby”. Avoid Maximal Exercise testing unless medically necessary. Not needed for a proper exercise prescription. HR > 150 are associated with reduced fetal blood flow, however HR varies greatly. Avoid exhaustion due to metabolic demand due to decreased fetal blood flow.

  4. F - I - T - T • Frequency - 3-5 days per week • Intensity – • For beginning exercisers: Light To Moderate <60% VO2max • For experienced exercisers: RPE 13-14 is better than HR • Time - 20 - 30 minutes goal • Type - CV - low impact • Strength - High reps, low weight, use machines or bands for safety. No Valsalva • Stretching – avoid movements that pressure the abdominal area or require lying on the back due to RFBF.

  5. Contraindicationsfor Exercise During Pregnancy Pregnancy-induced hypertension Premature rupture of membranes Preterm labor during previous or current pregnancy Incompetent cervix Persistent second- or third-trimester bleeding Intrauterine growth retardation
