Topic: Making and using Appropriate Technologies For Community Transformational Development
Objectives At the end of this lesson, we will • Understand the importance of appropriate using technologies in transforming communities. • Know how to make simple appropriate technologies • Learn how to use appropriate technologies in the communities we work.
A Role Play • I don’t think the local community within which I work need appropriate technology . • Why not, and why do you think so? 1. Most of them are not educated. They are just peasant farmers. 2. If they have any problems related to their farm work, then they need to know how to make and use various appropriate technologies.
Introduction Everyone of us who works on any mission field, using the CHE Strategy or not, needs to know how to make and or use simple appropriate technologies that will help bring transformation and development of such a community within which they are working. But let me ask this questions:
Introduction • What is appropriate technology • Do we need appropriate technologies in transforming and developing our rural communities? • What are some of these technologies that we can use to help bring transformation and development in our communities? • Where can we get materials & tools for the work? The ones we want to talk about include:
Introduction • Simple Hand-operated water pumps • A Dish-drying Rack • Solar Cookers, and or • Wooden Compressed Brick Machines
Simple Hand-operated water pumps • A PVC Pipe or Bamboo Water Pump (Well Water) (a) Materials

Treadle Irrigation Pump (Foot-Operated Peddled Pump)
Treadle Irrigation Pump INTRODUCTION Treadle pump can do most of the work of a motorized pump, but costs considerably less to purchase. Because it needs no fossil fuel, it also costs less to operate. All the pond, lake and groundwater can be the water source. It can increase the area of water supplying by lengthening the intake pipe and discharge pipe. Properly adjusted and maintained, it can be operated several hours a day without tiring the users.
Treadle Irrigation Pump FEATURES Pump cylinders Each treadle pump has two cylinders which are made of engineering plastic. The diameter of a cylinder is 100.5mm and the height is 280mm. Non-return Valves The pump has two pairs of non-return valves, one pair inside of the valve box and the other pair outside. These valve flaps are flat and semicircle . They are made of rubber with the diameter of 90mm and the thickness of 2.5mm.
Treadle Irrigation Pump Pistons The piston is assembled with one piston rod (25mm x 6mm) ,two rubber cups with the thickness of 5.5mm and three steel plates, the bigger plate in the middle and the other two smaller on each top . Treadles The treadles are made of channel steel with the length of 1000mm. The hinge is at the end. Treadle support The treadle support ensures that the pump is portable and supports all other components of the pump and users. It is made of 50mm x 30mm square steel tube.
Treadle Irrigation Pump ADVANTAGES It frees the farmer from the limitations of rain fed farming and raises their capacity to grow crops in both dry and rainy season. Cultivate expansive land area: With the use of Treadle Pump, the Farmers can cultivate all the year round thus increasing their cropping intensity, and never leave their land fallow.
Treadle Irrigation Pump Productive : The Treadle Pump is capable of delivering 7000 liters of water per hour from surface water while being operated by a single person without tiring the user. The pump is capable of working up to a maximum depth of 8 meters. However, operation beyond 7 meters is not recommended to preserve the integrity of the rubber components. The farmers can plant more different crops: Treadle Pump technology enables the farmers to plant crops they were not able to plant before.
Treadle Irrigation Pump A series of new advantages is brought with the using of plastic pump body: Light weight • Small friction, • low wear and tear • High efficiency • Good seal • Rustles • Corrosion-resistant • Low price • New engineering plastics, • Firm and durable

Treadle Irrigation Pump • Fitting instruction and Maintenance Cylinder assembly1. Locating the rubber cup seal into the cylinder;2. Pushing the piston inside the cylinder3. Move up & down in the cylinderEach piston has two rubber cups, one faces to the bottom of the cylinder and the other to the top. The pistons can be removed from the pump without detaching the rope which connects them together. When replacing the pistons, it is important to take care and make sure these rubber cups are not be damaged. And it is important to keep sealed.
Treadle Irrigation Pump Assembly of TreadlesConnect the end which has hooks with the piston rod, and the other end with the treadle’s support.Put the dowel into the shaft, when you fixed the treadle.
Treadle Irrigation Pump Pump storage and care of HosesAfter irrigation is finished, roll up the hose properly in the field ,taking care not to drag it over sharp objects, and then carry it to the homestead. On no account should the hose be loosely folded and dragged over the ground from the field to the homestead, as this will decrease its service life.Store the pump and its fittings in a safe location. Pay particular attention to prevent damage to the hoses and rubber components.
Treadle Irrigation Pump Seal the pump intake and discharge pipes to stop rodents gaining access to the flap valves in the valve box. When carrying or storing the pump, avoid denting the cylinders. If this happens the piston will not move easily within the cylinders and water will leak between the rubber piston seals and the cylinder wall, making the pump less effective, furthermore, try not to bend the piston rods.
Treadle Irrigation Pump Debris in the Valve BoxMud or vegetation may be accidentally drawn into the Valve Box of the Pump through the Suction Pipe if no mesh strainer is used. To remove such debris, lay the Pump and remove ten nuts that fix the baseboard to the bottom of the Pump.
Treadle Irrigation Pump Take great care not to lose any of the nuts or washers. With the nuts and washers off, remove the Baseboard and Rubber Gasket so give access to the Valve Box. Remove any debris and check the condition of the Rubber Flap Valves at the same time, which can be easily seen. After cleaning the Valve Box, fit on the Rubber Gasket, Baseboard and Washers, and retighten the ten nuts.

How to Make a Solar Cooker Panel Refer to the CHE lessons already planned on the CHE CD on Solar Cooking – Panel Cooker making please. I took it and put it on this PowerPoint presentation.
How to Make a Solar Cooker Panel Objectives 1. Participants will understand the principles of cooking using the sun’s energy. 2. Participants will be able demonstrate solar cooking. 3. Participants will be able to construct a solar cooker.
How to Make a Solar Cooker Panel Role Play: Two people talking.
How to Make a Solar Cooker Panel Introduction Today we are going to explain instead of demonstrate how to cook using the sun. We would have set up the sun cooker to cook food that will take about 2 hours in the sun before we learn how to make a sun cooker. This is because we don’t have the tools and materials here physically.
How to Make a Solar Cooker Panel We shall break into pairs and talk on some examples that you observed in your life, what the effects of the sun on the air and objects it shines on, and report back when we come back together after 5 minutes.
How to Make a Solar Cooker Panel Examples of the Effects of the Sun: • House gets hot when the curtains are open. • Sunny side of the bus in too hot to sit on. • Rocks by the river are too hot to sit on. • Water Storage Tank heats up in the sun. • Air in car gets really hot when the windows are up. • Night is cool but the days are warm. • Wet clothes dry quickly in the sun. • Paved road by my house is too hot for my feet.
