  6. Congenital Malformations, Deformations, and Chromosomal Abnormalities • Congenital Heart Defects – 27% • Chromosomal Abnormalities – 15% • Central Nervous System – 14% • Skeletal Defects – 11% • Genitourinary Malformations – 10% • Pulmonary Malformations – 8%

  7. Complications of Pregnancy • 46% of all infant deaths result of “conditions originating in the perinatal period” • Leading Causes • Low birth weight – 33% • Premature rupture of membranes – 8% • Infection – 6%

  12. Positional Asphyxia as Cause of Death • 20 infants identified • Male – 11 • Female - 9 • Death from positional asphyxia – 18 cases • Contributing factor – 2 cases • Age at time of death • Range: 3 wks- 10 mos • Average: 2 1/2 mos
