Overview of the Module Series Administering the MAEIA Assessments Scoring and Reporting the MAEIA Assessments Using the MAEIA Assessments to Demonstrate Educator Effectiveness 1 6 2 7 8 3 4 5 Introduction to the MAEIA Project Overview of the MAEIA Assessments Overview of the Content Standards Assessed by the MAEIA Assessments Selecting the MAEIA Assessments Navigating the MAEIA Website
Purpose of this Module Before the assessment is used. While the assessment is being administered. After the assessment is completed. Preparing to score student work (Module 7 covers the actual scoring of student responses). Describe the steps that arts educators should take to prepare to use the MAEIA assessments they selected
Before Administering the Assessment Determine if the assessment will be used to demonstrate educator effectiveness and if so, how (see Module 8) Visit our website for more detailed information: maeia-artsednetwork.org/educator-effectiveness-methods Determine when the assessment will be used Determine the actual class days in which the assessment will be used.
Before Administering the Assessment Decide whether the assessment can be used as is, or whether you will modify it You may modify to better fit your planned instruction. Be sure to write the modifications in the Teacher Booklet. Make sure the modifications are reflected in the Student Booklets and the Teacher Scoring Rubric(s), if appropriate.
Before Administering the Assessment 1 2 3 Determine if/how students’ responses will be recorded for later scoring by the teacher. Determine when you will score student responses. Determine the feedback to be given to students who participate in the assessment.
Assessment Administration Download a copy of the Assessment Administration Manual at: maeia-artsednetwork.org/model-assessments Review the manual for general guidelines, information, and advice on administering the MAEIA assessments. Review it before starting to administer the assessments to help ensure a smooth assessment administration process.
Before Administering the Assessment Distribute the “MAEIA Parent or Guardian Consent to Digital Recording” if student responses to the assessment will be used in local professional learning activities. Use the MAEIA Parent or Guardian Consent Inventory to keep track of which forms have or have not been returned.
Before Administering the Assessment Download and print the necessary assessment materials--both the Teacher Booklet and the Student Booklet
Review Each Teacher Booklet The content standard(s) assessed A narrative overview of the assessment The amount of time necessary to administer each part of the assessment The materials required for the assessment How to set up for the assessment administration Each Teacher Booklet contains important information that will help you plan how to administer the assessment.
Before Administering the Assessment Obtain the extra materials needed to administer the assessment. Read through the Teacher Booklet several times. Practice administering the assessment to a colleague or friend.
During the Assessment Observe students during the assessment and note any issues, confusion, or questions on their part. Such issues may indicate that directions need to be clarified during the assessment. At its extreme, such issues may call into question whether the assessment represents students’ actual achievement. Be sure to read the assessment directions given in bold print to all students.
During the Assessment Photograph, video or audio record students’ responses to the assessment where indicated. – This will permit you to focus on administering the assessment as well as later scoring of student responses. Before recording individual students or groups of students, announce student names followed by a brief pause.
During the Assessment You can also video record responses for students who may have difficulty writing their responses to any questions or prompts. Collect the assessment materials between class periods and at the conclusion of the assessment, as indicated in the instructions.
After the Assessment At the bottom of each form, tally the number of students scoring at each performance level. Repeat this for each Teacher Scoring Rubric in the assessment. Score all student work for which there is a Teacher Scoring Rubric and use the MAEIA Classroom Score Summaries to record individual student scores – see Module 7 for more information.
