  1. 3.8 Paragraph Introduction You will need to keep these notes for the entire school year!

  2. Definition: A 3.8 paragraph contains three support sentences and a total of eight sentences, hence the name 3.8 paragraph. What is a 3.8 paragraph?

  3. The first sentence is a topic sentence. (TS) • This sentence lets the audience know the subject to be discussed in your paragraph.

  4. You will then offer a support sentence (SS) where you offer one piece of evidence to prove your topic sentence. • The SS is followed by an explanation sentence (EX) where you expand on the information in your SS. • This pattern is repeated two more times.

  5. You will finish your 3.8 paragraph with a concluding sentence. (CS) • This sentence provides an overall statement for the information presented in your paragraph.

  6. Your 3.8 paragraph looks like this: TS (Topic Sentence) SS (Support Sentence) EX (Explanation) SS (Support Sentence) EX (Explanation) SS (Support Sentence) EX (Explanation) CS (Concluding Sentence).

  7. TS-Students can improve grades with a few easy steps. Okay, so what do you think this paragraph will contain? Example 3.8 Paragraph

  8. SS-Taking notes during class is the first step. EX-Writing down important information helps students listen more closely and provides good material for review. How does the EX sentence provide elaboration for the SS?

  9. SS-Another way to improve grades is to participate in class. EX-Sharing ideas and answers during class discussion not only helps a student to stay alert during class but leads to better understanding of material presented.

  10. SS-Perhaps the most important step is to attend class regularly. EX-Missing class often causes students to miss key information or explanations that prevent them from knowing how to complete assignments.

  11. CS-Using good study skills pays off in improved grades and in better understanding. How does this sentence sum up the information presented in the paragraph? How does this sentence tie back to the TS?
