  3. GKS Aims • To lay the foundation for developing a sustainable global research network around the area of Knowledge Management • To research the role that information and knowledge play in various industries • To build the world largest empirical database for knowledge and information needs in industry • To acquire funding for joint research projects among the partners of this network from national, regional and international funding bodies • We expect our investment into research to lead to high quality journal publications KnowAndManage Proprietary

  6. Questionnaire Please think about your daily tasks (whether engineering or managerial); your role in the product life cycle; the different situations during this process; problems to be solved, decisions to be made and your needs for information and knowledge. Imagine you are trying to understand previous products/services for modification, upgrade, maintenance or use now or in future products/services. • Previous: Describe the information and knowledge you would like to retrieve from previous products / services • Future: Describe the information and knowledge you think should be captured to assist future engineering tasks • Significance: Why is a focus on knowledge important in your organization? 7. Potential Categories • Initial 69 categories proposed by Heisig, Peter et al. (2010), Exploring knowledge and information needs in engineering from the past and for the future - results from a survey • 87 additional terms which in our opinion could serve as categories and searched again for their occurrence • Combining some of the categories belonging to the same field of activity or the same significance. For example: • Legal/ Law/ Legislation/ Regulation/ Rule/ Convention/ Directive • Effectiveness/ Efficacy/ Efficiency/ Reinventing the wheel • Recommendation/ Influence • This left us with 130 categories mentioned in 2175 data points KnowAndManage Proprietary

  8. Used Categories - 1 Total data points = 2175 Total categories = 130 KnowAndManage Proprietary

  11. Category Grouping • Operation • Engineering • Logistics • Business • Information relation and format • Relating to the information (how do respondents relate to the information, or have a significant connection with it or bearing on it). • Information format (the way in which the information is presented, organized, arranged, or kept). • Each of these groups and sub-groups was then observed to include two aspects repeating themselves across all the groups. These are: • Activity • Effect KnowAndManage Proprietary
