  2. Hedonism Self-indulgence; pleasure-seeking The 1960s is viewed as a time of hedonism; since drug use and free love were standards of the youth culture, it seemed they were only interested in pursuing pleasure.

  3. Ignominious Adj. shameful Our culture is so wacked-out that having the wrong brand of shoes is considered ignominious, yet some people view having a criminal record as a mark of pride.

  4. Abrasive Adj. rough; coarse; harsh (sandpaper) Punk rock music, with its discordant tones and screamed lyrics, is so abrasive. Listening to it hurts my ears!

  5. Bilk V. Cheat; defraud The chief financial officer (CFO) of the corporation bilked shareholders out of millions of dollars before he was fired.

  6. Covert Adj. Hidden; undercover Edward Snowden exposed the NSA’s covert programs that monitor US citizens’ cell phone and Internet usage.

  7. Harangue Noisy, attacking speech His mother’s harangue fell on deaf ears; whenever she started in on a tirade about how irresponsible he was, Todd just tuned her out.

  8. Replete Adj. Full The model home was replete with all the latest gadgets and opulent furnishings; it would have cost millions!

  9. Blasphemy N. Speech that offends religious sentiments My very conservative and religious grandmother thought that saying “darn” was blasphemy. We were careful never to say anything really offensive near her!

  10. Enigma Puzzle; Mystery Jeff’s F on the essay was an enigma, since he was generally a strong writer and had studied and planned.

  11. Reprehensible Adj. Shameful; Very bad Victoria thought the boy’s lack of manners was reprehensible, and when he asked her out for a second date she vehemently refused.

  12. Hasten V. Hurry; accelerate; rush Carlos hastened home from school because his uncle was scheduled to arrive during the day and Carlos couldn’t wait to see him.

  13. Haughtiness N. Arrogance; pride;snobbery Many times people will misinterpret shyness as haughtiness; we automatically assume a person is stuck up instead of introverted.

  14. Plethora N. An excess There is such a plethora of new technology that the most advanced gadget is obsolete within six months.

  15. Cryptic Adj. Puzzling; enigmatic I hate when doctors give some cryptic answer to my questions. Of all the people who should be able to give information to me clearly, a doctor is the most important!

  16. Bombast N. Arrogant, pompous language The politician’s bombastic tirade at the debate turned many voters off. Very few people like a candidate who seems conceited.

  17. Heed V. Listen to My mother would lead in to some advice by saying, “Heed my words…” meaning I should listen and do as she said.

  18. Boorish Adj. Ill-mannered Huck Finn would smoke, swear, and skip school before Ms. Watson took him in, but she vowed to change his boorish behavior and “sivilize” him.

  19. Odious Adj. Revolting; hateful He has the odious habit of correcting people all the time. Everyone hates this and doesn’t want to hang around with him.

  20. Noxious Adj. Harmful; poisonous; lethal Scott released noxious gasses after eating beans, and we all had to leave the room.

  21. Ensconce V. Firmly establish in a position The math department chair at SGHS is ensconced in that role; she has held it for 20+ years and won’t even talk about retiring.
