This update outlines the key requirements for Recording Prior Learning (RPL) assessments to comply with AQTF and NCVER standards. Emphasis is placed on the need for high-quality assessment processes over sheer quantity of evidence, with auditors focusing on evidence matching Training Package and industry needs. Important elements include thorough recording of assessments to reflect learner needs and maintaining a selection of assessments for validation. Raw evidence should be preserved only for validation and showing the diversity of approaches, not for each individual candidate.

WSI Recognition Update October 2008 WSI Recording RPL Assessment Outcomes
Meeting the AQTF and NCVER standards • AQTF Standard 1 requires that the assessment of the evidence matches Training Package and industry requirements • There is no formula for the number of forms of evidence – auditors are looking for quality assessment processes as opposed to a particular quantity of evidence • Sufficient evidence should be considered - for example - interview, observation and employer testimonial or reference. • NCVER audit requirements for AVETMISS requires evidence that an assessment has been conducted – description of how the candidate was assessed in order for the RTO to claim ASH • AQTF Standard 2, Element 2.4 requires that the assessment suits learners needs
Minimum requirements for recording RPL assessments • Complete Record of RPL Assessment form – summarizes the RPL judgement against Training Package and industry requirements and summarises the evidence provided and how the assessment was made • Samples of the raw evidence are not required for each RPL assessment • Samples of raw evidence should be kept for validation purposes and to show the range of RPL approaches and standards
For audit purposes.... For the duration of each qualification keep a selection of RPL Assessments for: • each qualification • each year • each target group • each different assessment process - portfolio, interview, on-the-job assessment • RPL Assessment Resources such as validated questions / observation checklists used for each qualification
You do not need to...... • Keep raw evidence for each individual candidate assessed • Assess elements and performance criteria separately • Assess each unit separately • Rely on paper based evidence • If you complete a WSI Summary of RPL Assessment you do not need to keep raw evidence for each candidate
