ZOOS. By: Leah Kasheta. What is a Zoo?. Place where animals are put in captivity and on display for the public. Contain wide varieties of animals native to all parts of the Earth. They are areas of a strong emphasis on scientific research and conservation.

What is a Zoo? • Place where animals are put in captivity and on display for the public. • Contain wide varieties of animals native to all parts of the Earth. • They are areas of a strong emphasis on scientific research and conservation. • They are constantly regulated and inspected by the government.

  3. Types of zoos • Urban • Suburban • Safari parks • Game reserves • Petting Zoos

  4. Urban and Suburban Zoos • Located in or around large cities • There is little room for the zoos to grow • Animal activists argue it is cruel to keep animals in urban settings due to cramped conditions, noise, and pollution • Suburban zoos provide more territory to roam around and more habitat

  5. Safari Parks • Areas where tourists can drive their own cars to see non-native wildlife living in large, enclosed areas • Larger than urban and suburban zoos

  6. Game Reserves • Game reserves are large areas of land where ecosystems and native species are protected. • Animals are allowed to roam free. • Animals in all game reserves are protected from illegal hunting.

  7. Petting Zoos • Petting zoos feature domesticated animals that are gentle enough for children to pet and feed. • These types of zoos are found at parks and inside of larger zoos.

Research in Zoos: • Breeding Biology • Important in breeding animals, especially endangered animals • Helped develop ways to better diagnose pregnancy • Veterinary Medicine and Nutrition • Important for the care of animals • Conducted studies to better formulate better diets • Animal Behaviors • Becoming more common • Used to understand how animals use natural habitat exhibits

  9. Controversy • Many animal activists think zoos are cruel to animals • Used solely for human entertainment • Cramped in small areas
