  10. CYBER BULLYING When teens use the Internet, cell phones, or other devices to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person.

  11. What Is Sexting? Texting or e-mailing, to another person, sexually explicit messages or pictures.

  12. Digital Disrespect What Is The Big Deal?

  13. Who Is A Cyberbully? Pretends they are other people online to trick others Spreads lies and rumors about victims Tricks people into revealing personal information Sends or forwards mean text messages Posts pictures of victims without their consent

  14. How Do The Victims Feel? Those who are bullied are five times more likely to be depressed and far more likely to be suicidal. One out of every ten students who drops out of school does so because of repeated bullying. • Angry • Frustrated • Embarrassed • Scared • Suicidal Harassment and bullying have been linked to 75 percent of school-shooting incidents

  15. How to be Positive? Blocking communication with the cyberbully Deleting messages without reading them Talking to a friend about the bullying Reporting the problem to an Internet service provider or website moderator

  18. Sexting . . . • Keep a guy/girls attention • Get noticed • Be fun/flirtatious • Pressure from friends • Get positive feedback

  19. Digital Disrespect Your Privacy isIMPORTANT!

  20. NOTHING Is Private • You may think your text messages/photos are safe and private. • You can’t control if they are forwarded to others • Forwarded text messages are the fastest way to spread gossip and rumors. • How many people could have access to a text/photo in a matter of seconds?

Ways to Stay Safe • Never post or share your personal information online (this includes your full name, address, telephone number, school name, parents’ names, credit card number, or Social Security number) or your friends’ personal information. • Never share your Internet passwords with anyone, except your parents.

  22. Ways to Stay Safe • Never meet anyone face-to-face whom you only know online • Talk to your parents about what you do online.

  23. Every Time You Send a Message • It gets stored on the cell phone company’s computer server. • Law Enforcement can access messages from the cell provider. • Deleted messages are retrievable. • Messages can be forwarded FOREVER

  36. Legal Consequences Defamation.Someone publishes a false statement about a person that damages his or her reputation. Invasion of privacy/public disclosure of a private fact.Someone publicly discloses a private fact about a person under conditions that would be highly offensive to a reasonable person.

  37. Legal Consequences Invasion of personal privacy/false light.Publicly disclosing information that places an individual in a false light. Intentional infliction of emotional distress. Someone’s intentional actions are outrageous and intolerable and have caused extreme distress.

  38. Criminal Consequences Having nude photos of ANYONEunder 18 (including nude photos of yourself) is a CRIME Convictions may prevent adults from getting jobs that require criminal background checks

  39. Criminal Consequences In Ohio, these crimes are currently punishable by: • A minimum of 6 to 12 months in a State Level Juvenile Detention Center • Classified as a Registered Sex Offender • Sex Offender Treatment Program • Probation • Fees/Fines

  40. But I’m a Juvenile • Age of participant doesn’t matter • School officials and law enforcement MUST investigate and report these behaviors • Taking or possessing inappropriate photos of ANYONE under 18 is ILLEGAL • Lawsuits can be filed against student and their parents.

  44. You Have No Right TO LOOK IN MY LOCKER/BOOK BAG YES WE DO Lockers are property of the school Students should NOT expect ANY PRIVACY in their school lockers. School officials with REASONABLE SUSPICIONmay search your locker or book bag at ANYTIME

  45. You Have No Right TO TAKE AWAY MY CELL PHONE YES WE DO School officials may take cell phone if the user is violating school rules or the law

  46. You Have No Right TO SEARCH MY CELL PHONE YES WE DO School officials may search phones when they have a REASONABLE SUSPICION the phone has been involved in inappropriate activity that violates school rules OR the law
