  1. Lab: Scientific Method & Optical Illusions

  2. Make you guess and then measure with a metric ruler. 1. Which line is longer, AB or CD? They are the same length What are the actual lengths of the two lines AB = 68 mmCD = 68 mm D A B C

  3. Make you guess and then measure with a metric ruler. 2. Which line is longer EF or GH? They are the same length What are the actual measurements? EF = 17 mmGH = 17 mm E F G H

  4. 3. Which Circle is larger? A or B They are the same size

  5. 4. Which center circle is largest? They are the same size again!

  6. 5. Which line appears longest, AB or BC? Line AB looks longer than BC Which is the longest? They are the same size (25 mm) A C B

  7. 6. Do you only see black shapes on white - or a word?

  8. 7. Which line continues straight through the diagram, A or B? The top one Check it with a ruler! Which one is it? The bottom one A B

  9. 8. Look at the pairs of lines in the three diagrams below. Do they look straight or curved? They look curved Check them with a ruler. Are they straight or curved? They are all straight Why do you think that they look curved? Give me your best hypothesis.

  10. 9. How would you describe the “rounded” shape on the inside of this structure? It is a perfect circle It is actually a perfect circle…..check it! Why do you think people perceive it differently?

  11. 10. Look at the box to the right. Describe what you see when you stare at it. Why do you think it appears the way it does?

  12. look at the words and reading out the color of the word and not what the word says. Not as easy as it sounds.

  13. There’s something quite freaky about looking at an image that you know is still but which appears to be moving. Flick your eyes over the image !

  14. Optical illusion… read the words between the blocks

  15. Is the blue face in front or behind?

  16. Why is it important to make good observations?
