  1. Glucagon-like Peptide 1: Possible Therapy for IDDM Mae De La Calzada

  2. Normal Pancreatic Function • Endocrine and exocrine gland • Secretes insulin, glucagon, and pancreatic peptide

  3. Diabetes • Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus Causes: autoimmune disorder pancreatitis • Type 2 Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus Cause: genetic predisposition

  4. Rationale Patients with IDDM either have disfunctional or non-functional β islet cells. However, with the introduction of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), mice pancreatic tumor cells differentiate into hormone producing cells.

  5. Research design • Materials AR42J cells GLU-1 Exendin-4 Exendin 9-39

  6. Results • GLP-1 works! It works through a Gs protein, therefore increasing intracellular cAMP levels. • Exendin-4 is 10 times more potent! • Increase in IDX-1 protein levels and Neuro D/Beta 2 expression.

  7. THE END That’s all folks!
