  6. How the Romans went to Christianity • People worshipped the gods in temples where they made sacrifices like animals or precious things. • The Romans believed that your spirit went to the underworld when you died. To get there the dead needed to cross the river Styx. To do so the family of the dead person would put a coin under the dead one’s tongue to pay the ferryman: Charon. • Romans also believed that their emperors became gods, so everyone had to make a sacrifice to the Emperor. • Christians often got into trouble because they refused to do this, and they had to worship in secret. Despite this, more and more people became Christian. • By the 4th century A.D. Christianity was so popular that the Emperor Constantine decided to make it the official religion of the Roman Empire.

  7. When and where the Romans worshiped The Romans worshiped at least once a day and on special occasions like religious festivals. They even had a special room just to pray and worship their favorite gods.Romans believed in many gods who controlled their lives and brought them wealth and good luck. Most Roman houses had a special place where the family worshipped. There were three family gods- Janus, god of the doorway, Lar, god of the house and Vesta, goddess of the household fire. The gods were offered food and drinks at the beginning of a meal. When Romans conquered other countries they started to worship the local gods because they were scared that they could get punished by them. Each of the Roman gods had their own temple where people worshiped them.
