HISTORY Established in 1906 as Higher Courses in Commerce 1915 – Name changed to Higher School of Commerce 1933 – Name changed to Central School of Commerce Until 1939 – Remained a private economic university possessing full academic rights During World War II continued its activity as an underground economic university – part of the higher education system of the Polish Underground State Between 1945 – 1949 the Central School of Commerce (SGH) resumed its activity as a private institution 1949 – The School was nationalised and renamed the Central School of Planning and Statistics (SGPiS)

HISTORY 1991 – The School regained its traditional name: Central School of Commerce (literal translation: Szkoła Główna Handlowa) and assumed the official English name – Warsaw School of Economics – to emphasize its university character SGH initiated also a restructuring of the School anditscurriculum.Three university-wide units were created, each headedbya dean. These are: ØBASIC STUDY PROGRAMME ØDIPLOMA STUDY PROGRAMME ØEXTRAMURAL STUDY PROGRAMME

In 1991 SGH was restructured into five Collegia: ØCOLLEGIUM OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ØCOLLEGIUM OF ECONOMIC ANALYSIS ØCOLLEGIUM OF MANAGEMENT AND FINANCE ØCOLLEGIUM OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC ØCOLLEGIUM OF WORLD ECONOMY They are responsible for: research and publications, development of academic staff and curriculum development.

SGH COLLEGIA In a sense, these are the equivalent of a Western faculty or school, though they lack some of the managing powers over programmes, student and academic administration, which are traditionally associated with faculties in a Western setting.The Collegia are made up of Departments and Institutes.

WARSAW SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS IN BRIEF ØAlmost 13,000 full-time and extramural students Ø Postgraduatestudents ~ 2,500 anddoctoralstudents ~ 450 Ø870 faculty members, including over 200 full professors ØThe largest economic library in Poland with over 960,000 volumes and a CD-ROM library ØStudents are assisted through a comprehensive tutoring system ØSelected courses taught in English, French and German ØA leader in adjusting economic studies in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe to the newly found political and economic freedoms

  7. DIPLOMAS Warsaw School of Economics awards two kinds of diplomas for full-time and extramural students: ØThe “LICENCJAT” Diploma(an equivalent of the B.Sc. Diploma) ØThe “MAGISTER” Diploma(an equivalent of the M.Sc. Diploma) Ø The Ph.D. Diploma Ø The “HABILITACJA” Diploma (the Advanced Ph.D.Diploma) The programmes offered to full-time and extramural students fulfil the same academic standards, although different didactic methods and organisational forms are applied.

EDUCATION SYSTEM ØCore curriculum, an obligatory basic offer for all students(3 semesters) ØIndividualization of the education after the 3rd semester Students are encouraged to pursue their academic interestsby creating a specialization, which encompasses the most appropriate courses ØThe tutorial system is designed to assist with this process ØUntil 1990 students had limited choice of a curriculum. Now, they are free to choose professors and disciplines in a manner that maximizes their intellectual development

  9. THE STUDY PATH The individual choice made by the student enables them to create his/her own path of study. The curriculum allows students to obtain more than one diploma, provided that they can meet the requirements of each field. Moreover the students may study in a foreign language, both at the Warsaw School of Economics and within exchange programmes.

THE STUDY PATH To complete the study path each student has to pass: Basic Study Programme 3 semesters 1200 contact hours(80 credit points) Diploma Study Programme 3 semesters LICENCJAT (B.Sc.) 1110 – 1200 contact hours (74 – 80 credit points) 7 semesters MAGISTER (M.Sc.) 2085 – 2175 contact hours (139 – 145 credit points) 1 credit = 15 hours of classes

  11. DIPLOMA STUDIES After the 3rd semester students study according to their individual programmes agreed with the tutor. Students are, however, obliged to pursue some common obligatory disciplines (level two) Level two disciplines: ØMacroeconomics or Microeconomics ØFinance ØHistory of Economic Thought ØInternational Economic Relations I ØIntroduction to Organisational Design and Management ØEconomic Policy I ØSocial Policy ØTwo foreign languages

  12. DIPLOMA STUDIES To graduate the students must meet the curriculum requirements of their specialization (level three). To obtain a diploma it is necessary to successfully complete all obligatory disciplines and collect the necessary number of credits.

  22. Ph.D. AND POSTGRADUATE STUDIES The Warsaw School of Economics is authorized to grant PhD (habilitation) degrees in economics and managerial sciences. SGH offers over 50 postgraduate programmes. They are organized to meet the needs of executives and economists. Their aim is to enrich the practical skills and strengthen the theoretical knowledge of businesspeople and economists.

  25. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATON SGH maintains extensive foreign contacts with over 100 universities. As a result the students have the opportunity to undertake studies in foreign languages and to obtain knowledge in specializations that are not well developed in Poland. These contacts serve to expose students and faculty to the rapidly changing global economy.
