  1. ID Training at NUH

  2. Why would one do ID? (over other medical specialties) • We mostly cure patients • Diverse opportunities from bedside to international public health • We are not organ specific and therefore maintain general skills • We make good detectives • Less vulnerable after hours as non-proceduralists • Good flexibility for more or less work (including part time)

  3. Why ID may not be for you? • No procedures = less money • Less of “your own” patients…. more consulting, therefore less predictable • Often juggling rather than fixed schedule

  4. ID training pathways & opportunities • AST through JSTC • ACGME-I ID Fellowship (from July 2013) • PhD • MCI • MPH • HMDP

  5. ID niches • Public health • Infection control • HIV • Transplant ID • Travel medicine • OPAT • Antibiotic stewardship • MOH, WHO etc consulting • Outbreaks • PK/PD • Specific organisms… flu, MRSA

  6. Global Health & ID

  7. We are well protected!
