Why would one do ID? (over other medical specialties) • We mostly cure patients • Diverse opportunities from bedside to international public health • We are not organ specific and therefore maintain general skills • We make good detectives • Less vulnerable after hours as non-proceduralists • Good flexibility for more or less work (including part time)
Why ID may not be for you? • No procedures = less money • Less of “your own” patients…. more consulting, therefore less predictable • Often juggling rather than fixed schedule
