  3. Romans 5:12-21 – Overwhelming Grace Two men have impacted the lives of everyone on earth: Adam and Jesus. No last names needed

  4. Romans 5:12-21 – Overwhelming Grace One brought death to us. One brought grace and the possibility of life.

  5. Romans 5:12 – Overwhelming Grace Connects back to verses 9 and 10.

  6. Romans 5:12 – Overwhelming Grace Sin brings death and enslavement.

  7. Romans 5:12 – Overwhelming Grace Christ brings life and deliverance.

  8. Romans 5:12 – Overwhelming Grace Paul begins a sentence he doesn’t finish until later.

  9. Romans 5:12 – Overwhelming Grace This statement is not about all men being condemned because of Adam’s sin.

  10. Romans 5:12 – Overwhelming Grace This statement is simple: because all sinned, all died.

  11. Romans 5:13 – Overwhelming Grace When there is no law, sin is present, but sin is not itemized.

  12. Romans 5:14 – Overwhelming Grace Even without Law, sin reigned and terrorized humanity, bringing death.

  13. Romans 5:14 – Overwhelming Grace People didn’t have to sin like Adam, all they had to do was sin.

  14. Romans 5:14 – Overwhelming Grace Adam is a “type” or model of Christ in that what he did affected all of humanity. The comparison ends there…but the contrast does not.

  15. Romans 5:14 – Overwhelming Grace Adam = head of fallen humanity. Christ = head of those redeemed as redemption comes from His act.

  16. Romans 5:15 – Overwhelming Grace From Adam, many died.

  17. Romans 5:15 – Overwhelming Grace From Christ, many will receive grace and the gift that comes from it.

  18. Romans 5:15 – Overwhelming Grace God is the Source of the gift, not the offense.

  19. Romans 5:15 – Overwhelming Grace Grace ABOUNDS, it didn’t just enter the world. There is within grace, more than enough than is needed, that is inherent in the gift of grace1

  20. Romans 5:15 – Overwhelming Grace Within the gift is abundance to exult in God and live triumphantly in spite of tribulations (5:3-4; 9-13)!

  21. Romans 5:16 – Overwhelming Grace The effect of the two are different: one resulted in servitude to sin, the other resulted in righteous actions.

  22. Romans 5:16 – Overwhelming Grace “Judgment” = God’s judgment that brought Adam death and to those who followed.

  23. Romans 5:16 – Overwhelming Grace On the other hand, the free gift brings release! (Justification by faith)

  24. Romans 5:16 – Overwhelming Grace The “judgment” also produced servitude to sin. “A burden ensuing from a judicial pronouncement—a servitude”. Enslavement!

  25. Romans 5:16 – Overwhelming Grace A person who has received the free gift (righteousness) can be “restored” to a life consistent with his new righteousness, he can do righteous things!

  26. Romans 5:17 – Overwhelming Grace One man, Adam, created this experience, this mess. Another man, Jesus, created another possible experience… freedom!

  27. Romans 5:17 – Overwhelming Grace Death reigns on the one hand, on the other people can reign in life…justified people!

  28. Romans 5:17 – Overwhelming Grace Grace has great potential to change people. That’s why Paul is so proud of the Gospel!

  29. Romans 5:18 – Overwhelming Grace Picks up what he started in v. 12. Judgment produced enslavement, servitude to sin.

  30. Romans 5:18 – Overwhelming Grace Justification is sourced in life and allows for a new lifestyle.

  31. Romans 5:19 – Overwhelming Grace The disobedience of Adam brings life. The obedience of Christ brings life.

  32. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace Once men knew God’s will, it made violating it greater.

  33. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace The Law exposed sin for what it was. Rom. 7:6

  34. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace Sin flies in the face of God’s will and it is offensive to Him.

  35. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace The Law makes sin greater by exposing it and, in a sense, enlarging it.

  36. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace Then, grace then became “super-great”, “extraordinarily abundant” and overflowed sin.

  37. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace The result was a reversal of this magnified sin and it’s rule.

  38. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace Death had spread to everyone and ruled our lives.

  39. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace When the believer has victory over sin, he reigns in life and grace is reigning. Grace overwhelms sin.

  40. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace Grace can reign because it is sourced in the gift of righteousness and eternal life.

  41. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace While righteousness is necessary, it doesn’t bring deliverance by itself.

  42. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace That comes from the life of Christ (5:9-10)!

  43. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace We have a union with His life (eternal life); we enter into it.

  44. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace That makes everything new; that makes many new life possible! That comes next week!

  45. Romans 5:20-21 – Overwhelming Grace Adam brought death and enslavement. Christ brings life and freedom.
