  1. Redemption out of Egypt

  2. The journey from Egypt to Israel is typical of our salvation God redeems us from Sin so He can bring us into His family forever!

  3. Egypt represented Slavery to Sin 'By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. (Ex 13:14-15) They were born in Egypt, born slaves through no fault of their own. God offered them freedom!

  4. Slavery in Egypt was like bondage to Sin Lev 26:13 God released you from slavery in Egypt, so you must obey Him and keep commands Dt4:20 Lord took you out of iron furnace(1Kg 8:51), out of Egypt, to be his inheritance Dt 5:6 out of Egypt, out of thehouse of bondage Dt6:12 that you will not forgetLord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of house of bondage Josh 24:17 because the Lord brought us and our fathers out of the house of bondage, we will not turn to idols Micah 6:4 I redeemed you from the house of bondage Israel should have been thankful for their freedom!

  5. Many wanted to return to Egypt • ) Why has the Lord brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"So they said to one another, "Let us select a leader and return to Egypt.“ (Num14:3-4; Neh 9:17)

  6. How are we doing on resisting a return to Sin The lust of the flesh • S The lust of the eyes The pride of life

  7. Numbers 21:4-9 4 Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses: "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread." 6 So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died. 7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. 8 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live." 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

  8. The Serpent on a Pole • Happens at the end of the 40 years wandering, just before entering the land • New generation was bit with the same problem as those who failed to enter in. • The problem is in our bodies – we have been bit by sin and poisoned to death • The solution is for anyone to look in faith to a serpent that has no power to harm – the devil destroyed • God can work with people who commit to putting Sin to death – take up their cross and follow Christ – God will forgive their sins and heal them 14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.(Heb 2:14-16)

  9. Jesus can do far more for you than a serpent on a pole John 3:14-17 14 as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoeverbelieves in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. Jesus can heal us from the power of Sin!

  10. 2 • S Matt 2:15 Out of Egypt I have called my son (quoted from Hos 11:1) G

  11. The Cost is Enormous! • Cost of redemption is the death of the firstborn • God had illustrated this earlier with Abraham and Isaac (Gen 22) • Foreshadowed how God was willing to give his only son to redeem us from Sin • Designed to impress us with the huge size of the ransom God provided to redeem us • 1 Pet 1:19 redeemed by the precious blood of Christ • Acts 20:28 Ecclesia He purchased with His own blood • Rev 5:10 Redeemed us to God by your blood Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

  12. How does the Ransom work? • Ransoms are paid to free people who are captured or enslaved • The ransom is the price of their freedom • Once the ransom is paid, the hostage is set free • God paid our ransom to set us free from Sin • It cost him the precious blood of Christ • We have been freed from slavery to Sin • God is hoping the death of His son will motivate us to choose to do God’s will, rather than serve Sin • The ransom is NOT a substitute for us! We still need to individually die to Sin

  13. Redeemed from an Iron FurnaceRemember??? Deut4:20-21 the Lord has brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be His people, an inheritance, as you are this day. 1Kgs 8:51-53 Solomon’s prayer: Out of Egypt, iron furnace– Your people, inheritance – please listen! Jer 11:4 I brought them out of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, 'Obey My voice, and do according to all that I command you; so shall you be My people, and I will be your God, God thought they would be thankful enough to obey His voice

  14. Redemption only accomplished by God’s mighty hand Num23:22; 24:8 Balaam: “God brings His people out of Egypt. He has strength of wild ox” Dt 4:37 Because He loved your fathers, He brought you out of Egypt with His presence, mighty power Dt 6:21 We were slaves & Lord brought us out of Egypt with mighty hand You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.(Rom 5:6)

  15. God redeemed Israel because of promises to Abraham Ezek 20:6-10 Redeemed for sake of fathers – not because they were good people Ex 2:24 God remembered his covenant with Abraham & heard the groaning of Israel Deut 9:5 That God might fulfill the word that He promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath. (Deut 4:31)

  16. Not because of our Righteousness Deut 9:4-6 4 "Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them out before you, saying, 'Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land'; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6 Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people. None of us deserve God’s gift of grace!

  17. Redemption begins with a Covenant God makes with His people Ex 19-20 God made covenant with people when He brought them out of Egypt Josh 5:2-5 all males who came out of Egypt were circumcised [figure out when this occurred!] Lev 26:45 God will remember His covenant when he brought our ancestors out of Egypt in the sight of the nations Hag 2:4-5 according to God’s word He covenantedwith Israel when He brought them out of Egypt, God’s spirit remains with Zerubbabel & Joshua Know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments (Deut 7:9-10)

  18. Designed by God so others will know He is the Lord Ex 7:4-5 so the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord Ex 18:1 Jethro heard how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt Num20:16 Moses explains to king of Edom that Lord sent angel & brought us out of Egypt Josh 2:10 Rahab: we have heard how Lord brought you out of Egypt God expects us to tells others about His great salvation He has given us!

  19. God changed the yearly calendar to cause Israel to remember His deliverance Ex 13:9; Dt16:1 remember Abib, when the Lord brought you out of Egypt, so keep Passover Num 1:1; 9:1 events now recorded on basis of day when came out of Egypt – Calendar revised This deliverance became the focal point of the year

  20. God designed laws & feasts to cause Israel to remember His deliverance Ex 12:17 observe feast of Unleavened bread cuz on this day Lord brought you out of Egypt  Ex 13:3-4 And Moses said to the people: "Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. [this became basis for feast of Unleavened bread] v.9 Sign, memorial – for with a strong hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt {again in Ex 23:15) Ex 13:11-16 Law of Firstborn supposed to remind children that with strong hand Lord brought us out of Egypt….out of the house of bondage Lev 23:39-43 dwell in booths 7 days (feast of Tabernacles), for I am Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt Deut26 remember hard bondage in Egypt, prayed to Lord, He brought you out of Egypt with mighty hand & outstretched arm, with great terror& signs & wonders, and brought us to land with milk and honey – therefore, I give the firstfruits & titheto Lord. We need reminders!

  21. Human Tendency to forget what God has done for us when we are safe, healthy & full Remember the Lord led you all the way Dt 4:22-24 But I must die in this land, I must not cross over the Jordan; but you shall cross over and possess that good land. Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you Dt8:11-14 when you have eaten full & heart lifted up, beware lest you forget the Lordwho brought you out of Egypt, house of bondage The better things are going for us & the easier our lives, the quicker we forget 

  22. He disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness When we forget about God’s Salvation, he attempts to chasten us, to bring us back 1 Sam 12:8-9 Lord brought you out of Egypt, but you forgot Him, so He sold you into hand of Sisera Psalm 106:21, 26 but they forgot God their savior who had done great things in Egypt, so he overthrew them in the wilderness God could give up on us, but He is merciful and sends angels to try to bring us back!

  23. Should have an impact on how we live & treat others Lev 11:45 Lord brought you out of Egypt. Therefore, be holy for I am holy. Lev 25:38 I am Lord who brought you out of Egypt to give you land of Canaan, take care of poor, don’t lend with interest. Lev 25:42 Don’t sell Jews as permanent slaves, they belong to God, He brought them out of Egypt Lev 25:55 don’t rule over Jewish slaves with rigor, must release them in Jubilee, because they belong to God since He brought them out of Egypt Num 15:37-41 Put tassel of blue– so remember Lord who brought you out of Egypt & be holy Jud 6:8 Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, house of bondage, delivered from Egyptians, gave you land of Amorites, drove them out. Ask you to not serve their gods. If we really appreciate God’s kindness & mercy to us, it will change the way we treat others

  24. Those without Faith didn’t appreciate God’s redemption Ex 14:11; 17:3 The faithless complained that the Lord had brought them out of Egypt to die Num 11:20 “why did we ever come out of Egypt?” Num 20:5 “why have you made us come out of Egypt?” Num 21:5 spoke against Lord & Moses “why have you brought us out of Egypt to die?” Dt 1:27 people complained God had brought them out of Egypt to deliver them to Amorites “Do all things without complaining & disputing” (Phil 2:14)

  25. Korah’s rebellion God’s redemption does not guarantee Eternal Salvation 1 Cor 10:1-5 Our fathers were baptized into Moses, ate & drank the same spiritual food & drink, but with most of them God was not pleased & their bodies were scattered in the wilderness Heb3:16 God was angry with those who came out of Egypt with Moses, overthrew them! Jude 5 He who saved a people out of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who didn’t believe So we see they could not enter in because of unbelief (Heb 3:19)

  26. Jacob & Joseph did not want to be left in Egypt Gen 47:29-30 Jacob wanted to be buried in Israel – Joseph did this for him. Gen 50:25 Joseph wanted to be buried in Israel Josh 24:32 Joseph’s bones taken from Egypt & buried in Shechem Acts 7:15-16 All the fathers were taken from Egypt & buried in Shechem By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones. (Heb 11:22)

  27. Lessons from Today • Think back on our sad past when we were slaves of sin – hopelessly burning in the iron furnace! • Thank God for his kindness & grace in providing us freedom, when we didn’t deserve it! • Remember what it cost God to redeem us! • Dwell on the glory that will be reveled in us and do not desire to return to slavery to Sin • Remember the covenant we made with God to join Christ in his death to Sin – don’t forget! • Our appreciation of God’s kindness & mercy to us should compel us to treat each other as God has treated us
