WHY LIFELONG LEARNING • Employment and Economic Independence • Learning new skills to adapt to modern demands based on I.T. technology for both employment and personal demands • Enjoyment and Pleasure – filling one’s available time • Gaining Knowledge and understanding • Mental health – stimulation and confidence building • Prevention of dependency and care • Opportunities for interaction and engagement with others • Opening up new opportunities and sensations

Case Study 1 - The ‘Unlocking the Potential of People over 50’ project at Marches Access Point in Kington, Herefordshire • Older people living in Rural areas are more ’at risk’ because of diminishing opportunities and facilities • Poor Transportation and communications allied to higher cost of living • Rural Poverty – farming in decline • Shift in Demographics. Young people moving out, older people moving in

The ‘Unlocking the Potential of People over 50’ programme • Intensive and planned programme of intervention • Individual mentoring, guidance and support based on personal aspirations and potential • Planned programme targeted at personal presentation and awareness • Introduction of practical information , guidance and support • Offering of alternatives i.e Self Employment, Social enterprise • Provision of direct and relevant Work experience in community organisations such as MAP • Provision of skills training particularly in I.T. • Continuous focus on positives and future targets • Ongoing publicity, promotion and campaigning at local, regional and national level – We are all in the process of ageing!!

  8. Case Study 2 ANNIE – then • Aged 50 • Recently Widowed with Teenage Son • Had only worked on family farm – already struggling for survival • No qualifications skills and poor I.T literacy • Confidence and self esteem at rock bottom

  9. CASE STUDY 2 cont ANNIE NOW • Now 52 • Massive gains in confidence an self worth • Qualifications as a basic skills tutor in I.T. • Self Employed • New partnership, new life away from Kington

Case Study 3 – the Tettenhall Institute – The Hub • Learning takes place locally • Facilitated by experienced mentor • Informal and work at their own pace • Use own equipment or loan the Hub equipment • Do NOT follow a programme of study • Equipment modified for their needs • Jargon kept to a minimum • Regular sessions on security
