  1. WLAN Cellular Offload in High Speed Moving Environment Date: Sep. 2013 Authors:

  2. Abstract • We have proposed a new activity to improve user experience in high speed moving environment through WLAN cellular data offload. • This presentation gives some motivation information why we think WLAN cellular data offload in moving environment is necessary and summarizes the requirements and challenges in realizing the scheme.

  3. Motivation • Mobile data traffic is explosively increasing due to continuously emerging services and wide spread of smartphones. • Increasing applications and services are provided to users through the “Cloud” with the rapid development of cloud computing technology and wireless connectivity to the “Cloud” is a must. • It’s significant for mobile users to enjoy the above services in kinds of environment, among which high speed moving environment such as city bus, subway, and high speed railway plays important roles. • …

  4. Requirements on the high speed environment • Due to large numbers of passengers, how to ensure public safety? • Real-time monitoring • Value-added service for passenger is preferred. • Traffic and traveling line information • Advertisement • Fast wireless network services during the journey for passengers. • Video streaming, online games, fast “cloud” connectivity, etc • Mobile office for business professionals • Video conferencing, remote login, etc

  5. Issues • Poor user experience through cellular services is usually observed in the high speed moving environment (e.g., high speed railway >200 km/h). • It is usually very difficult just to browse the web in China high speed railway. • Reasons that result in poor user experience. • Severe Doppler frequency shift • Frequent inter-cell handover • Large numbers of passengers • … WLAN is a promising alternative to improve user experience

  6. Requirements on the cellular data offload in high speed moving environment • WLANs need to provide better user experience compared with the cellular systems in terms of data rate, cost effectiveness, etc. • Requirements in 12/1063r0 Requirements on WLAN Cellular Offload by NTT contains many of the requirements. • It’s significant to support plug & play, achieving the rapid deployment of WLAN in the high speed moving environment.

  7. Challenge • Wired backhaul is impossible in moving environment and wireless backhaul is a must. • Enhanced function should be added to APs to support wireless backhaul. • Keeping stable and high throughput wireless backhaul in the case of frequent handover. • Guaranteed security of wireless backhaul is a must.

  8. Summary • WLAN offload cellular is a promising solution for excellent user experience in moving environment. • Requirements and challenges to be studied • Fast and convenient deployment of WLAN (plug and play) • Stable and high throughput wireless backhaul • Enhanced APs • Security
