  2. From Genotype to Phenotype! • Decode the genotype to produce the Larkey’s phenotype!

  3. Larkey Parents Female Parent Male Parent Genotype Genotype A A a a E E e e f f F F t t T T Record their genotypes and draw the phenotypes on the “Larkey Breeding Record.”

  4. Larkey Genetics • The parent Larkeys will produce a male and female Larkey. • Record their genotypes and draw the phenotypes on the “Larkey Breeding Record.”

  5. F1 Generation Results • Genotypes= Aa, Ee, Ff, and Tt • Phenotypes = short legs, red eyes, solid fur, bushy tails • All offspring will have the same genotypes, and therefore, the same phenotypes. Why?

  6. Types of Alleles • homozygous alleles = both parents started with genotypes that had identical alleles, so there is little diversity; homozygous may be two dominant or two recessive alleles; AA, aa, EE, ee, etc. • heterozygous alleles = genes with one dominant allele and one recessive allele; Aa, Ee, etc.

  7. Punnett Squares • This is a simple graphical way of discovering all of the potential combinations of genotypes that can occur in children, given the genotypes of their parents. • It also shows us the odds of each of the offspring genotypesoccurring.

  8. Immigrant Male • Now, an immigrant male produces a son and a daughter with the female. • This will increase diversity!

  10. F2 Generation Results-Male • Genotypes = Aa, EE, FF, and Tt • Phenotypes = • As more Larkeys are introduced, the genetic diversity will increase! This creates a healthy population. • Record their genotypes and draw the phenotypes on the “Larkey Breeding Record.”

  11. F2 Generation Results-Female • Genotypes = AA, EE, ff, and tt • Phenotypes = short legs, red eyes, spotted fur, bare tail • As more Larkeys are introduced, the genetic diversity will increase! This creates a healthy population. • Record their genotypes and draw the phenotypes on the “Larkey Breeding Record.”
