  1. Decision Making Learning Targets: Apply the decision making process to a real life decision Differentiate between ways to make decisions Form examples of the Decision Models

  2. Definitions • Decision: Conclusion or judgment about some issue or matter • Decision Making: The process of getting to a conclusion • Indecisive: Not having or showing the ability to make decisions quickly and effectively.

  3. Remember when you wanted to do something and your parents said you had to do what they wanted? When you asked why all they responded with was, “Because I said so!” Those were the days when decisions weren’t yours to make. As you get older and enter the adult world, you will have SO many important decisions to make that will guide your life’s path.

  4. What You Need to Have First Confidence in your abilities to make responsible decisions! Critical thinking skills- cause and effect, alternatives, foresee consequences of certain actions Reflect CONSTANTLY!

  5. Ways to Make Decisions • Logic/Common Sense: analyze all options and consider consequences of each • Intuition: Follow instincts and gut feelings • Past Experiences: If you faced a similar decision, this one will be based off of the last’s outcome. • Parental/Outside Guidance: Using other people to help make decisions or using what parents taught you to do in certain situations.

  6. Decision Making Models 1 Central Satellite Model: A central decision is surrounded by decisions that affect it. • Suitable for larger more complicated decisions • Example) a parent going back to school Main Decision

  7. Decision Making Model 2 Chain Model: Each decision builds on the previous one forming a sequence of decisions. • Appropriate for smaller, orderly decisions • Example: Preparing a meal Action Decision Action Decision Decision Decision Action

  8. Journal Entry Topic: Decision Models Date: 10/9/12 In your journal, make an example of a decision using the Central Satellite Model and one using the Chain Model

  9. C’s of Decision Making Process • Construct the problem. • Compile limiting factors. • Collect potential alternatives. • Compare the alternatives. • Consider the best alternative. • Commit to the decision. • Reflect on the decision

  10. Decision Process Example • I can’t decide what college to go to. • Tuition, distance, travel time and gas money, friends there or not • Illinois State University, Iowa State University, Harper Community College • ISU: ISU is a good teaching school, far from home but not too far, a lot of people from high school go there, it’s more expensive than Harper but less than Iowa. Iowa: It is a farther drive and distance from home, costs more than other alternatives, only one friend will be there with me, has my major Harper: Cost the least, close to home, a few friends will be around too, have to live at home, miss the college experience for the first year or two • ISU gives me the distance from home, college experience, is good for my major, has some friends, I probably will have to have a job to compensate for the gas money and tuition increase. • I will go to ISU! REDBIRDS  • I made a great decision to go to ISU. Although there is more debt than I would have had if I went to Harper, I met new friends while keeping some old. I got a great education for teaching and I got the full college experience. I got to experience living on my own but I was close enough to home to come back on weekends when I wanted. Great decision overall!

  11. Snowball Fight! Write down a decision you have to make in the near future. This can be a BIG decision or a small one. Write your name on the top so we know who to return the paper to. We will throw the paper around and each round you will help your classmates go through the decision making process to make an informed decision! 
