  3. Within its limits is the ancient town of Bethel.

  4. Abram • Genesis 12:8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.

  5. Jacob. • Genesis 35:15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel. • 2 Kings 10:29 However, he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit-- the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.

  6. Mention with Jacob. • Genesis 28:18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. • Genesis 35:15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.

  7. Judea is hilly and rocky

  8. But Israel is very fertile when out of the mountains.

  12. Caesarea Maritima • The Romans had no interest in making Jerusalem their capital. It is way up in the Judean mountains and not strategic.

  13. Herod built this city in 12 years.

  14. Herod the Great was so named because he was a great builder, not a great king or personality.

  15. Paul was in prison here for two years.
