Implementation Plan for Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive in Albania

This project aims to implement the National Plan for Approximation of Environmental Legislation in Albania, funded by the European Union. The plan includes a legal gap analysis, stakeholder discussions, and identification of implementation measures and costs. The final goal is to establish sewerage systems and wastewater treatment plants for urban agglomerations larger than 2000 person equivalents.

Method and purpose Methods used for this study comprise: • documents and legal framework overview, • legal gap analysis, • discussion with main stakeholders, • Identification of necessary implementation measures and • their cost assessment. Final purpose: Realisation of sewerage systems and wastewater treatment plants for the urban agglomerations larger than 2000 person equivalents

Implementation of the National Plan for Approximation of Environmental Legislation A project for Albania funded by the European Union Plan development Implementation plan was developed in 3 steps: • Inventory of status of existing water supply, sewerage and wastewater treatment in Albanian cities • Identification of urban agglomerations • Preliminary design of sewerage and wastewater treatment systems for the agglomerations

Implementation of the National Plan for Approximation of Environmental Legislation A project for Albania funded by the European Union Selection of agglomerations Preliminary selection of agglomerations through: Territory of Albania divided into 6 river basin districts Selection of all settlements > 1000 inhabitants (Census 2001 report) Clustering of settlements into agglomerations where centralised wastewater treatment may seem feasible on the basis of geographical information
