  2. Born: September 28th, 1849 • Died: July 21st, 1924 • Education: Bowdoin College 1871-1875, Yale College, Yale School of Medicine 1875-1879 • Historical time period: Emergence of a Profession Dudley Sargent -1849-1924

The Sargent System • Dudley Sargent was placed on the faculty of physical training and then named director of the Hemenway Gymnasium at Harvard University in 1879 • Dudley combined other systems into a program of physical education • Sargent used Calisthenics, German-and Swedish-style exercises, and specialized machine exercise • Dudley was the inventor of gymnasium apparatus; like bars, rings, vaulting horses, ropes, ladders, parallel bars, specialized exercise machines

Sargent School of Physical Training • Founded in 1881 in Cambridge, Massachusetts • Later became part of Boston University in 1929 • Developed exercise machines; pulley systems with adjustable weights • Students were able to learn training techniques to strengthen and improve the physical abilities of all people

Contributions to our profession: • Emphasized training for all students, not just athletes, he largely created discipline of physical education • Founded a school solely for Physical Training • Invented exercise equipment and tests that are used today • Helped change the belief that building or strengthening the body was considered beneath the dignity of educated men. Dudley pushed for Physical Education for all ages and gender.

Little or well known facts: • Held four terms as president of the American Physical Education Association • Invented the vertical jump test and many kinds of exercise equipment that are used in gyms today • Sargent had great interest in anthropometry • Dudley Sargent also published three books and many articles and papers and papers on Physical Education • Universal Test for Strength, Speed, and Endurance (1902) • Health, Strength, and Power (1904) • Physical Education (1906)
