  2. OVERCOMING SIN! • Introduction 1. 1 Jn. 5:1-5 God defeats all sin by the gospel

  3. 1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 1. 1 Jn. 5:1-5 God defeats all sin by the gospel

  5. OVERCOMING SIN! • Introduction 2. God teaches us how to overcome sin: • Seek God’s forgiveness • Greater faith in God • Resist, fight temptations • Seek good counsel • Make heartfelt apologies to people we hurt • Develop our talents to serve God

  6. OVERCOMING SIN! I. Seek God’s Forgiveness A. Based on God’s Greatest Gift: Death of Christ • 1 Jn. 4:9-10 Perfect sacrifice for our sins: reflects the horror of sin & the love of God

  7. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. • 1 Jn. 4:9-10 Perfect sacrifice for our sins: reflects the horror of sin & the love of God

THE SPIRIT WORKS THROUGH HIS WORDIN THE NEW BIRTH“Born of water and of the Spirit” (Jn. 3:5) JN 3:16 Trust Christ not self THE SPIRIT’S WORD 1 Pet. 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. Acts 2:38 Love God not sin Rom 10:10 Confess Christ not man Acts 22:16 Submit to Christ in baptism, pleading pardon, & begin new life!

  12. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. 24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. • Acts 8:22-24 Each step of restoration reverses the deadly effects of sin: repent, confess, pray

Sin Is Unbelief in Action, Obedience Is Faith • Num. 20:12 Moses & Aaron guilty of unbelief 12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

  14. OVERCOMING SIN! II. Greater Faith in God A. Sin Is Unbelief in Action, Obedience Is Faith • Heb. 11:8 By faith Abraham obeyed 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

  15. OVERCOMING SIN! II. Greater Faith in God A. Sin Is Unbelief in Action, Obedience Is Faith • Exercise obedient faith: yield our will to God= self-discipline, self-denial

Trust God to Lead Us to a New Life • Prov. 3:5-6 Trust His instructions, not my will, my way, my wishes, my wants 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Trust God to Lead Us to a New Life • Ex. 14:13 Fear not, wait on God, obey when He speaks 13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

  18. OVERCOMING SIN! II. Greater Faith in God B. Trust God to Lead Us to a New Life • Ps. 57:1 Trust Him till the calamity passes 1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

  19. OVERCOMING SIN! II. Greater Faith in God B. Trust God to Lead Us to a New Life • Ps. 51:17 True change of heart includes commitment to live a new life 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

  20. OVERCOMING SIN! III. Resist, Fight Temptations A. Determine to Battle with God’s Help— Trust Him to Give Victory • 1 Cor. 10:13 He opens ways of escape

  21. 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. • 1 Cor. 10:13 He opens ways of escape

  22. OVERCOMING SIN! III. Resist, Fight Temptations A. Determine to Battle with God’s Help— Trust Him to Give Victory • Ja. 4:6-10 God helps us if we resist Satan

  23. 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. • Ja. 4:6-10 God helps us if we resist Satan

  24. OVERCOMING SIN! III. Resist, Fight Temptations B. Focus on Specific Dangers • Gal. 5:19-21 Know your weaknesses: sexual, religious, attitudes, lack restraint, etc.

Sexual Sins 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. • Gal. 5:19-21 Know your weaknesses: sexual, religious, attitudes, lack restraint, etc. False Religion Sinful Attitudes Loosen Restraint

  26. OVERCOMING SIN! III. Resist, Fight Temptations C. The Tongue Is a Vital Battleground • Ja. 3:10-11 Temper & tongue reveal the heart 10 Out of the same mouthproceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

  27. OVERCOMING SIN! IV. Seek Good Counsel A. Seek Counsel from the Wise Not Fools • Prov. 24:6 We are at war with sin! 6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.

  28. OVERCOMING SIN! IV. Seek Good Counsel B. Seek Counsel from Christians Not Sinners • Rom. 12:2 Be transformed not conformed 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  29. OVERCOMING SIN! IV. Seek Good Counsel C. Seek Counsel from the Mature Not Immature • Heb. 5:13-14 Mature in Scripture & life 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

  30. OVERCOMING SIN! V. Make Heartfelt Apologies to People We Hurt A. This Is Necessary to Be Right with God & Man • Matt. 5:23-24 Apologize, or our worship vain 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

  31. OVERCOMING SIN! V. Make Heartfelt Apologies to People We Hurt B. Make Correction with Those We Misled • Matt. 18:6 Wrong example a stumbling block 6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

  32. OVERCOMING SIN! VI. Develop Our Talents to Serve God A. Study God’s Word: Source of Strength, Growth • 1 Pet. 2:1-3 Study with intense desire to learn 1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

  33. OVERCOMING SIN! VI. Develop Our Talents to Serve God B. Our New Life in Christ Equips Us to Serve God • Eph. 2:8-10 We are saved to serve! 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

  34. OVERCOMING SIN! VI. Develop Our Talents to Serve God B. Our New Life in Christ Equips Us to Serve God • Diligent, zealous, selfless service to God, to our family, to the saints, & to other people overcomes sin!
