  1. Fletcher's Arrows Model Excellence (on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test – OSSLT)

  2. Why do I have to write the OSSLT? To prove that you have acquired the literacy skills (reading and writing) that you are expected to have acquired by the end of Grade 9.

  3. When will I have to write the OSSLT? The test will take place on Thursday, March 26th, 2015, beginning at 8:45a.m. and ending at 12:30p.m.

  4. What will I have to do on the test? The test is made up of two booklets. Inside these booklets you will be expected to: • Readinformational text • Readgraphic text • Readnarrative and/or dialogue text • Readnews report text • Writeshort answers based on your reading – 6 lines • Write a news report • Write a series of supported opinion paragraphs • Answermultiple choice questions based on your reading • Answeropen response 6 lines

  5. Hints to encourage student success: * Fill in all lines * Answer all stuff * Mark up the pages * can't Edit enough!

  6. Fill in all lines • The lines provided for you outline the expected length of your answers; fill all of the lines without going over. • Going over the prescribed number of lines will lead to a mark of zero on that question. • Use the rough work areas to ensure that you plan your answer before writing it in the lines provided for you. • Write as clearly and as concisely (i.e. "to the point") as possible.

  7. Answer all stuff • Do not leave any of the questions blank! • You do not lose marks for incorrect answers, but you will receive failing marks for unanswered questions. • Even if you do not know the correct answer…GUESS! • When answering short answer questions, answer in complete sentences.

  8. Mark up the pages • Mark up the questions to ensure that you understand what you are being asked (i.e. underline and circle important instructions and key words) • Mark up any texts that you are asked to read as you go along, identifying the 5WH and the topics of each paragraph (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How)

  9. can't Edit enough! • Many students finish early; if you are one of these students, ensure that you edit every single section of your test • Mark up - the questions to ensure that you have answered the questions fully. - Mark up the texts to ensure that you answered the questions correctly. • Check for grammatical errors, for spelling errors, and for punctuation errors. • Add to your long writing tasks if you have not filled in all of the lines. • Review your multiple choice answers to see if they make sense.

  10. What can I do to prepare for the test? • Complete practice activities and questions, which can be accessed on our school website: www.fmss.ca....Student Life….OSSLT • Attend the extended OSSLT workshops that take place in room 222 at lunch. • Attend all of the upcoming workshops to which you are invited.

  11. With all of these tips in mind, all of you Fletcher's Arrows willModel Excellence! Good luck on the 2015 OSSLT!
