The Reconstruction Era (1865-1877): Rebuilding the South and Advancing Civil Rights

The Reconstruction Era, from 1865 to 1877, was a pivotal period in American history aimed at reintegrating the Confederate states into the Union following the Civil War. Key policies included the Freedmen's Bureau, which established schools and hospitals for African Americans, and the passing of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, which abolished slavery and ensured citizenship and voting rights. Despite these advancements, African Americans faced severe challenges, including systemic racism and violence from groups like the Ku Klux Klan, which sought to suppress their newfound rights.
