  1. Guide for Using Clarendon College’s Library Resources Compiled by Clarendon College Library Staff

  2. Welcome! • Welcome to the Clarendon College Vera Dial Dickey Library Online Tutorial. Information Literacy is the key to lifelong Learning and success. This tutorial is designed to provide a self-paced learning experience to help you succeed in your research assignments.

  3. Clarendon College Home Page • Here is a step-by-step guide to using some of the resources related to finding materials located in our Clarendon College Library. • First, open Internet Explorer. On campus students will see Clarendon College as our home page. Then click on Quick Links then Library.

  4. Library Home Page • Welcome to the library homepage. To begin your search of the online catalog, click CC Online Catalog.

  5. Starting the Search - HLC • Type in your search. • Be sure to designate Clarendon College Library by clicking the dropdown menu, or you will search all the libraries connected to HLC. • Be sure to define your search by selecting author, title, subject, or word or phrase. • Press Search to retrieve a list of titles.

  6. HLC • For this tutorial we will search for information about Stephen Crane.

  7. HLC • Some (but not all) titles have a picture of the front cover beside the book. • From this screen, click More Info located on the left side of the title. This will take you to the citation page where you will find the Library of Congress call number for this item.

  8. HLC • The Library of Congress call number is located at the bottom of the screen under the heading Holdings, as well as the location of the item and the availability of the item.

  9. HLC • Some books are available though electronic resources or eBooks. • There will be a link symbol or the URL link to click on.

  10. OED • The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of 600,000 words past and present, and from across the English- speaking world. • All students will need to ask library staff for the username and password.

  11. SIRS • Another good search technique you can use is the SIRS (Social Issues Research Series) search feature. The SIRS database contains SIRS Researcher, SIRS Government Reporter, and SIRS Renaissance. • From the CC Library homepage click on “SIRS”

SIRS • The next window is the main SIRS log-in page. • Note: Database are only available to Clarendon College students, off campus students must contact library staff for the Customer ID and the Password. • Once you have entered the ID number and the password, that will bring you to the next screen.

  13. SIRS • This is the SIRS homepage. • Click Educator’s Resources located at the top of the screen for tutorials and useful information about each database. • Clicking Topic Browse tab located at the top will bring you to the next screen.

  14. SIRS • To find literary criticisms, click Literature located under SIRS Renaissance. Then click on Literature. • There will be • many Articles, • Newspapers, • Magazines, and • Reference • resources to use • for you research.

  15. SIRS • Now Click on Quick Search Tab. • Perhaps you’re looking for literary criticism on Ambrose Bierce. • Type his name in the search box then click “Search.”Key words are not case-sensitive. Be sure to click on Keyword.

  16. SIRS • There will be many Articles, Newspapers, Magazines, and Reference resources to use for you research. You can click on the title or the icon by the title to open article.

  17. TexShare • Another source of good information is TexShare. • Go to the Library homepage and click TexShare. • That will bring you to this window.

  18. TexShare • Scroll down the page until you see the heading Complete List of Licensed Databases. • Under the heading Books and Literature. Click Contemporary Literary Criticism.

  19. TexShareGale Literary Databases • From this window, you can search by author’s name, title of work, year or publication, year of author’s life/death, ethnicity, or gender.

  20. GALE • Search “Ambrose Bierce” be sure to click the Contemporary Authors tab. • You will get this window. • Then Select the article that is appropriate for your research needs.

  21. TexShare • If you scroll further down or back up on the TexShare page, you will find a wealth of information on any number of subjects. • The most used databases are: • EBSCO HOST • Gale Literature Resource Center • WorldCat • InfrTrac

  22. NetLibrary • NetLibrary provides access for over 27,000 e-books, journals, and databases. • From the library homepage, click NetLibrarylisted under Find Books or A-Z list of Databases. That will take you to this screen.

Explore the Databases • The databases may be set up different but they generally work the same way. • Some special feature you may find on the databases. • You can print them • You can email them • Some you can listen to as well as read them. • Always look at the bottom of the page, most articles have the citation at the bottom or a link some where on the page.

  24.
