8th Grade OCR Reading Program Overview with Mrs. Tara Stepanian

Welcome to the 8th Grade OCR Reading class with Mrs. Tara Stepanian! With a Bachelor's and Master's degree in education, Mrs. Stepanian brings extensive experience to the classroom. Students will explore various text selections, engage in read-alouds, and enjoy independent novels, aiming to read 6 novels by June. Weekly homework will consist of reading at least 5 pages a night and completing occasional skills reinforcement worksheets. We emphasize preparation, respect, teamwork, and positive communication. Expect a year of growth, learning, and fun!

  3. Course Highlights • Text Selections • Read Alouds • Independent Novels • Goal is to read 6 novels by June • Presentations • 5 - 10 pages a night • Class Novels - more difficult • Goal is to read 4 novels by June

  4. Homework • Given 7 days a week • Read at least 5 pages a night • Should not take hours (20-30 min) • Will periodically have skills reinforcement worksheet • Checked for completion • Accepted late, but with significant point reduction • Posted on the website • www.longhill.org

Expectations Of Students • Prepared • Assignment pad, homework, notebook, folders, pencil/pen, Independent Novel • Open Mind • EVERYONE can find a book that they like • Respectful Of Parents • Work together as a team • Communicate • Positive and negative • Model the usefulness of Reading • Magazines • Newspapers • Novels

  6. Grading • The following percentages will be used to calculate students’ marking period grades. • 35% Tests • 25% Projects • 20% Quizzes • 10% Homework • 10% Classwork

  7. Incentives • Homework Passes • Bathroom Passes • Prizes We will have a weekly goal to work toward to earn incentives. The goal will vary based on the needs of the class.
