Understanding Work-Based Learning: Enhancing Career Readiness for Students

Work-based learning (WBL) offers students valuable experiences that prepare them for successful careers. It encompasses activities that help students acquire workplace skills, guiding them in making informed career choices. Despite high interest in relevant jobs and careers, many students underutilize campus resources. Engaging with guest speakers, job shadowing, internships, and cooperative work experiences fosters student growth. To address students' needs, we must integrate WBL into curricula and provide reflective opportunities, helping students navigate their career paths effectively.

  3. Work-based Learning Is: • Experiences that acquaint students withworkplace • Activities that teach students skills for success in the workplace • Workplace experiences that help students make career choices

  4. What did the students say? • 94% are interested in working at a job that relates to their studies • 76% want help finding their “ideal career” • Only17% have taken advantage of career services on campus • 72% would like visit business sites • 90% want to spend some time with someone actually doing the job they think they want • Only 7% have taken an internship class

  5. Why do students need it? • Students are concerned about their future and want some help with the process • Just reading about career information isn’t nearly as powerful or influential as experiencing something first-hand • A good percentage of students don’t take advantage of services already available on campus

  6. What are some WBL examples? • SCANS Skills integrated into classroom • Guest Speakers • Worksite Visits • Informational Interview • Job Shadow • Internship • Cooperative Work Experience • Mentor • Service Learning

  7. How can we help students? • Integrate work-based learning experiences and skills into the curriculum • Teach students the career development process • Provide opportunities for students to experience the workplace • Allow students to reflect on their experiences and plan for the “next steps”
