Dans un écosystème en équilibre, la perte de matière associée par exemple à la respiration est compensée après la production primaire= la photosynthèse. Les décomposeurs permettent le recyclage des déchets organiques en matière minérale. Si un des maillons vient à manquer (exemple: pêche au thon rouge) alors tous l’écosystème est en déséquilibre.
