  1. Timelines Ms.Young April 2010

  2. What am I going to learn today?!? • What a timeline is and how it can be used • Important events that happened from 1945-1969 What am I going to do today?!? Create a timeline of important events

  3. What is a timeline and what does it do? • A timeline is a representation of events in chronological order • Timelines help us understand history. They also tell us what happened when and how much time went by between events.

  4. What does a timeline look like? Timelines come in many different shapes, sizes, and formats. Some go from top to bottom while others go from left to right.

  5. What things should be on a timeline? • Title • The title of a timeline should tell what the timeline is about. Having a title for a timeline makes is easier for readers to preview what the timeline will be about. • Dates • The more specific the date the better we can understand when the event happened. For example: July 5, 2008 is more specific than July 2008 • Events • Some timelines have only a few words to describe the event. Others many have many sentences and even include pictures.

  6. Who can use timelines? • Anyone who wants to keep track of things that happen on certain days or in certain years can use a timeline. They don’t always have to be about things that have happened in history.

  7. Example 1 • Maria's parents want to keep track of important things in her life. They decide to make a timeline. Maria is born in 1993. She walks for the first time in 1995, when she is 2. The next year, she says her first words. And in 1998, she celebrates her fifth birthday. Her parents can keep track of all these things by putting them on a timeline like the one at the right.

  8. Important Events in Maria’s Life

  9. Example 2 • Historians use timelines to track things like the growth of a civilization, the progress of a war, and the development of a new technology. • They can also keep track of important dates in history like when famous explorers set off on their famous voyages. • For instance, look at this list of explorers, listed in alphabetical order: Columbus reaches the New World in 1492 Da Gama reaches India in 1498 Drake completes sailing around the world in 1580 Magellan discovers what comes to be called the Strait of Magellan in 1520

  10. Wrap Up • Timelines are useful tools that help us organize information and events. • Timelines can be used by anyone and for a variety of information. • ALL timelines should include a title, dates, and events. • Timelines come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

  11. The BIG Question…… How can we use timelines when talking about History?

  12. One great way to use a timeline when talking about History is to create a timeline showing important events and when they happened. • These events can include • The creation of NASA • The building of the Berlin Wall • The beginning of the Vietnam War • When American astronauts land on the Moon

  13. Your job as a class….. • is to create a timeline for the important events that happened from 1945 - 1969!! • The timeline will start in 1945 with the creation of NATO and end in 1969 when Americans walked on the Moon.

  14. Things that need to be included on the timeline…… • Name of the event • Date of the event

  15. Let’s begin thinking, learning and creating!!!!
