  1. Cell Membrane • Phospholipid Bilayer- (fats) that surrounds the cell and controls what enters and leaves the cell • Knickname= the Bouncer

  2. Nucleus • Nucleus -controls most of the cell’s processes and contains the instructions for making proteins • Knickname= • Da Boss

  3. Nuclear Membrane/ Envelope • Nuclear Envelope- surrounds the nucleus, and controls what enters and exits nucleus • “Body guard”

  4. Nucleolus and Chromatin • Nucleolus- in nucleus, where the assembly of proteins begins • “Baby Boss” • Chromatin- made of DNA and protein • “the Info”

  5. Cytoplasm • Cytoplasm- fluid outside the nucleus- surrounds all organelles • “Jelly”

  6. Mitochondria Organelle that carries out cellular respiration. Uses glucose and oxygen and converts it ATP- energy the cell can use “The Powerhouse”

  7. Ribosomes- location where proteins are made (protein synthesis) • “Hamburger Factories”

  8. Lysosomes • Lysosomes- has digestive enzymes that breaks down excess or worn down cell parts, food particles and invading viruses and bacteria • “Lysol Cleaner”

  9. Cytoskeleton- provides structure and helps transport substances around the cell • “The Pipes”

  10. Golgi Apparatus- • Modifies, stores, and transports proteins • “UPS”

  11. Endoplasmic Reticulum • Smooth ER- No Ribosomes • Synthesis (makes) of lipids, detoxification of drugs and poisons • Rough ER- has Ribosomes • makes and transports protein • “Fatty Liver”

  12. Vacuoles • Vacuoles- storage place in cell (large in plants) • “The Warehouse”

  13. Plant cells • Cell Wall • rigid outer layer made of cellulose • Provides Protection and Shape • “Wall-e”

  14. Plant Cells • Chloroplasts- in plant cells, capture energy from sunlight and convert it into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis • “Green Beans”

  15. Animal Cells • Flagellum- a whip-like projection of cell membrane for movement • “The Whip” • Cillia- thin projections of cell membrane for movement • “Lil’ Hairs”

  16. Centrioles • Help with cell division (mitosis) by sending out spindle fibers • “Fisherman”
