  1. Honors Geometry Section 5.1Perimeter and Area

  2. The perimeter of any closed figure is the distance around the outside.

  3. For a polygon, the perimeter can be found by adding the lengths of the sides.

  4. While the perimeter of a rectangle or square can be found by adding the lengths of the four sides, it may be more convenient to use the following formulas.Perimeter of a rectangle =__________ Perimeter of a square = ______

  5. Example: The perimeter of a rectangle is 80cm. If the length of the base is seven times the height, find the dimensions of the rectangle.

  6. The area of any closed figure is the number of square units needed to completely fill the object.

  7. If a unit of length, such as inch(in), foot(ft), or centimeter(cm), is given for a figure, then the area of the figure will be , and you will be expected to put the proper unit on your answer. If no unit is given in the problem, you will not give a unit in your answer.

  8. Postulate 5.1.5 The area of a rectangle with base b and height h is given by the formula….Area of a rectangle =_______Area of a square = _____

  9. Postulate 5.1.3 The Sum of AreasIf a figure is composed of non-overlapping regions A and B, then the area of the figure equals the area A plus the area B.

  10. Example: Find the area of the figure at the right. All segments are perpendicular.
