  1. X-Ray Gratings MissionStudy Summary Team Lead Mark Steiner 19 – 23 March 2012

  2. MDL Mission Study Summary • MDL developed mission concept for Off-Plane (OP) configuration, based on customer inputs • No major issues identified • MDL developed 1st order subsystem effects of going to CAT configuration • Each subsystem identified direct impacts on them • No evaluation of effects across system boundaries. Examples: • Power not rolled up to system level and then reflected in new power system or thermal designs • Mass not rolled up to system level and then reflected in new ACS or thermal designs • No formal, final report out to customer team • MDL concentrated on OP configuration, CAT effects, and then capturing information in their presentations • Presentations were reviewed by MDL team for internal consistency on Friday with customer attendance, but MDL team did not go through design rationales, for example • Delta options identified for last X-ray mission study (“Delta” week) • Move OP design from L2 to LEO • Further develop CAT design • Concentrate on reducing mission cost • Decision to be made at later date

  3. Mission Summary – Final (same as Monday) Orbit parameters – L2- 800,000 km LV – Falcon 9 Launch date – June 11, 2021 Mission Lifetime – 3 yr /5 year goal Mass estimate – payload: 198 kg (Instrument) 245 kg (X-Ray Mirror) – 442 kg total Power estimate – payload: 222 W (Instrument) , 213 W (X-Ray Mirror) – 435 W total Mission class – B Disposal plans – None Needed at L2 (MDL to confirm) Study name: MDL X-ray Grating WBS: 244904.04.10.01.02 ”MDL X-ray Grating” in remarks

  4. MDL Areas of Concentration/Study Drivers • Nominal mission implements the Off Plane Grating Instrument Concept • Investigate impact of implementing alternate Grating Instrument (CAT grating) • Similar operating concept , similar interface parameters • Any changed interface parameters are lessened with the CAT instrument concept • Comparison of SC interface parameters will be provided at the MDL CAN A SECOND SC CONCEPT BE GENERATED DURING THIS MDL STUDY, IMPLEMENTING THE CAT GRATING INSTRUMENT Or alternately • Nominal Mission concept has OP Grating Instrument implemented • However the SC must accommodate the CAT instrument concept with minimal modification • Other Areas of Focus • Use of Solar Panels to balance CP-CG offset • Solar Panels act as FMA Sunshade • Adapt AXSIO inner Mirror purge cover for this SC concept • Need for heater power on the SC structure adjacent to FMA to maintain FMA thermal requirements

  5. Study Plan for the week –Final (same as Tuesday) • Monday AM: review study expectations and identify key issues PM: 1) define ConOps 2) discuss derived subsystem requirements and ask questions • Tuesday AM: System drivers – TBD subsystems PM: Start subsystem checks • Wednesday AM: I&T Flow, Mission Ops PM: Finish Off-Plane (OP) design • Thursday AM: Examine CAT configuration PM: Finish 0th order quantization of CAT configuration (no separate MEL) • Friday Final chart walk-through with customer team (not a presentation, consistency check) • Monday following 1) Lessons learned, process improvements, lab status, etc. 2) Finalize presentations and wrap up the study
