University of Arkansas CURRENTS • CURRENTS • Center for the Utilization of Rehabilitation Resources for Education, Networking, Training, and Service • We serve Region 6 though our various grants and fees for service • Arkansas • Louisiana • New Mexico • Oklahoma • Texas • Primary Customers are VR and IL

CHIRP Participants • The Center of Independent Living Staff • Consumer control (staff and governing board) • Community based, cross-disability, nonresidential nonprofits • Array of IL services includes 4 core services of I & R, peer counseling, life skills training, self & system advocacy • Funded by Rehab Act Title VII and/or State/other grants • State Voc Rehab Program Youth Transition Counselors & Appropriate Supervisors / Staff • Funded through Title I of the Rehab Act • All services must lead to employment outcomes

  7. “It takes a village to raise a child.”PROJECT GOALS By focusing on the common goal of successfully transitioning young people with disabilities to adult roles in their communities we will: • Improve cooperative working relationships between CILs, the SILC, the DSU and other relevant agencies in the State of Texas • Develop tools, techniques and strategies for CILs to add value to transition services in the State of Texas. • Build communities of support for youth in transition by strengthening collaboration. • Develop evidence-based practices for replication across the country.

  8. Year 1 • Think Tank and Texas Incubator Met • Developed/Reviewed Round I Training Curriculum • Initiated collaboration between CILs and DARS • Identified how CILs & DARS together will add value to youth transitioning • Began visioning and strategic planning

  9. Year 2 • Completed Round I Training with Pilot CILs and DARS • CBCIL - September 2006 • PILC – December 2006 • ARCIL – January 2007 • Refined the training for the remaining CHIRP sites • Completed Round I with rest of the CILs and DARS

  10. Year 3 • Think Tank and Texas Incubator Met • Developed/Reviewed Round 2 Training Curriculum • Round II Training Begins! • Pilot CILs and DARS • Learn From Pilot Sites / Refine Training • Rest of Texas CILs and DARS

Year 4 & 5 • Reaching My Own Greatness Trainings • Evaluate project goal attainment • Provide TA as needed • Nationwide CHIRP Duplication • Think Tank will provide peer mentoring to other states • Texas CILs will peer mentor in the IL Net / APRIL Peer Mentoring Program • Web-based training and resources available
