Reading test(unseen passage) In 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg on its first trip across the Atlantic and it sank four ours later. At that time the Titanic was the largest ship that ever travelled on the sea. It was carrying about 2244 people. But it had taken life boats only1178 people. When the passengers tried to leave the ship, only 651 of them were able to get into the boat. The Carpathian was 58 miles away when the Titanic on its called radio for help. It arrived two hours after the great ship had submerged and it had saved 704 people. Some of them survivors had been in the icy water for hours when they were saved. Most of them had not lived that long.1502 had lost their lives. Through the whole tragedy, The Californian was only ten miles away. Its officers were closed enough to see the Titanic but They could not understand the situation. The never received the Titanic call for help and they did not come to rescues the passengers.
