  2. Terms • A.I.D.S. = Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome • AIDS is the final and most serious stage of the H.I.V. disease • H.I.V. = Human Immunodeficiency Virus • H.I.V. is the virus that causes AIDS

  3. I. H.I.V. is a retrovirus • A. It’s genome is RNA instead of DNA B. It uses an enzyme reverse transcriptase to transcribe DNA from RNA II. H.I.V. attacks human T-4 cells III. Once there are no T4 cells left, a person has AIDS T-4 Beach Day

  4. IV. Ways H.I.V. is transmitted • A. Unprotected sex with an infected person 1. Condoms are only 97% effective. 2. HIV is smaller than sperm B. Transmission from infected woman to her baby C. Through needle sharing D. Blood transfusions or needle-stick injuries

  5. V. A.I.D.S. Facts • A. First case in 1981 in U.S. was a homosexual male • B. AIDS now affects everyone • C. Nearly 1 million people in U.S. infected with H.I.V. • D. 40,000 new confirmed cases in U.S. per year • Over 50% of new cases are of youth under 25

  6. 35 new cases in 2010 400 people are living with HIV/AIDS in South Dakota
