  1. Using Positional Words Within the School Environment Unit of Study 1: Building Community Within the Mathematics Classroom While Describing and Using Positional Words Global Concept Guide: 1 of 1

  2. Content Development • This unit of study includes both building community within the mathematics classroom and mathematical content specified by the Common Core State Standards. Building community includes procedures to support best practices in mathematics instruction (but is not limited to) such as: • Calendar Time • Cooperative Learning Structures • Routines and Procedures For the Use of Manipulatives • Math Journaling • Accountable Talk • Classroom Discussions • Incorporating Mathematical Practices

  3. Content Development • The mathematical content of this unit focuses on the use of positional words. • Focus on developing positional vocabulary, not on shape vocabulary. • Example: “Put your backpack inside your cubby” or “Place your pencil box on top of your desk” • Positional words will be reinforced in Units 6 and 12 by combining the names of shapes with positional words. • Unit 6 Example: “I can see the red square is on the desk next to the triangle.” • Unit 12 Example: A student tells you she created a pentagon by “putting the triangle pattern block above the square pattern block to make a house shape.”

  4. Day 1 -2 Day 1: Procedures and Manipulatives Day 2: Accountable Talk

  5. Day 3 -4 Days 3 and 4: Positional Words Chart

  6. Day 5 Students will demonstrate their understanding by constructing Positional Word Towers Snap Cubes The yellow snap cube is on top One red snap cube is in between the yellow and blue One red cube is above the blue and below the yellow

  7. Day 6 Math Notebooks • This day will be spent on making the math notebooks and discussing the importance of keeping a notebook. • Suggested procedures: Where the notebook is kept, what pages we record on, what belongs on each page, etc.

  8. Day 7 Partner A Partner B Problem Solving Process with Foam Cubes I agree with you. I know my purple cube is under the green cube and the blue cube I know my purple foam cube is above the yellow cube and next to the red cube

  9. Day 8 Establishing Math Norms: • Promoting productive communication in the classroom. Teacher will make an anchor chart to go over specific math norms in the classroom. • Teacher may add any other norms used in the classroom for the year.

  10. Day 9 Application of all Math Norms • Using the stoplight lesson and poem from Voyages, find ways to incorporate the norms from Day 8. Model and ask questions for students to incorporate the norms.

  11. Math Notebook Entries • .

  12. Day 10: Performance Task right above below left under between on over

  13. Literature for your Classroom Library Rosie’s Walk– Have students act out Rosie’s actions Going on a Bear Hunt- Have students act out the actions (click on link for video) Brown Bear Brown Bear– Have students use character representations from the story to model positional words, ex: place the red bird above the brown bear
