James 1:1-4 King James Version (KJV) 1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. 2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

  3. Addressed to the Jewish Christians, the 12 tribes of Israel who are scattered abroad. These were the Jews of the Dispersion( Jews beyond the borders of Palestine) who remained or settled in the foreign countries after they were released from captivity. They are now in the Roman World.

  6. James is helping us today to understand temptations and trials Trials and temptations are designed to help us improve our current condition and to be strengthened. Patience, in this scripture text, is translated as “longsuffering." The "Perfect Man": This is a mark of Character that a believer has when they have passed their tempting moments and trials of faith. It breeds "peace."

  10. The second mistake is to fear a trial. If we trust God's Word, then we would expect a tempting moment and a trial, and we would not fear a trial coming. It is in 1 Corinthians 10:13 " There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."

  11. Reasons we face trials: • To glorify God (Daniel 3:16 -18, 24-25) • Discipline for our known sin (Hebrews 12:5-11; James 4:17 ; Romans 14:23 ; 1 John 1:9) • To prevent us from falling into sin (1 Peter 4:1-2) • To build faith (1 Peter 1:6-7) • To cause growth (Romans 5:3-5)

  12. Reasons we face trials: • To teach obedience and discipline (Acts 9:15-16; Philippians 4:11-13) • To equip us to comfort others (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) • To prove the reality of Christ in us (2 Corinthians 4:7-11) • For testimony to the angels (Job 1:8; Ephesians 3:8-11; 1 Peter 1:12 )

  13. You have to make sure you are not bringing unnecessary trials and tempting moments into your life that God didn't agree for you to have! But if so, they will also fulfill and meet the requirements above to make sure you learn from what you brought upon yourself.
