Heroes. (No, not the TV Show). Heroes. What is a Hero? Someone who represents the highest ideals, or what we would like to be in our fondest dreams. Shows us we can triumph over opposing forces.

Heroes • What is a Hero? • Someone who represents the highest ideals, or what we would like to be in our fondest dreams. • Shows us we can triumph over opposing forces. • Someone who represents our values, such as courage, strength, loyalty, and honor. It is less important they possesses these qualities, but important we believe they posses these qualities.

  3. Heroes • What is a hero(cont’d) • They must risk to do something special • Often this is physical, violent, and potentially fatal. They MUST put an end to conflict. • How they act is important. They act out of commitment to a system of values of their group (their tribe, society, or nation). • They must be a seeker. • They have a quest or mission which will be dangerous and necessary.

  4. Heroes Five types of heroes • 1. Super Man Hero • 2. Supreme Man Hero • 3. Leader Hero • 4. Common Man Hero • 5. Lowly Man Hero

  5. Heroes • The Super Man Hero • Superior to ordinary mortals. • They are greater and different from us. • They can control their world in ways we can’t control ours • They can defy natural law • They are like a god • They can solve all our problems

  6. Heroes • Supreme Man Hero • Superior but still human • More powerful, with a godlike aura • Capable of making mistakes, but seldom does • Physically vulnerable, but seldom hurt • He can die

  7. Heroes • Leader Hero • A figure who we identify with • Human, not at all godlike • Capable of error and sin • Of this world, and subject to it’s laws • The best the world can produce

  8. Heroes • Common Man Hero • Figure who possesses no more power, virtue, or skill than us • Ordinary person who happens to rise to extraordinary occasion, and becomes a hero of the moment. • No special powers, but has managed to call upon all of their natural resources

  9. heroes • Lowly Man Hero • Usually inept and disreputable • We don’t try to be like them • Most likely found in literature

  11. Heroes • The Anti-Hero • Literary character who does not conspicuously embody any value system except his own private one, which is in conflict with their society • Becomes an anti-establishment figure • The villain
