Welcome to E&M: Course Overview with Mrs. Reilly for Students and Parents

DESCRIPTION

Join Mrs. Reilly in her E&M Physics class at Norwin, where students engage with advanced topics such as vectors, electrostatics, electric forces, DC circuits, and magnetism. With a background in Mechanical Engineering and extensive experience in education, Mrs. Reilly aims to provide a challenging, rigorous course for seniors. Communication is encouraged through email, and technology integration is supported with BYOD. This introductory course prepares students for college-level physics with a clear focus on problem-solving techniques and practical labs.

  1. Welcome to E&M! Mrs. Reilly Periods 1 and 8

  2. Introduction • Who is this person attempting to teach your teenager about the laws of physics?? • Education/Work Background: • BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from WVU in the late 1980s. • Worked in nuclear and telecommunications industry for 12 years. • Returned to school for teaching certification from University of Pittsburgh • Began teaching at Norwin in 2010 • Currently teach Geometry and E&M

  3. Course Overview • Vectors • Electrostatics • Electric Forces • DC Circuits • Magnetism • This class serves as an introduction to material that will covered during the 2nd semester physics course in freshmen year of college.

  4. Class Format • Grading on points basis • Five-Step Problem Solving Method required (like last year) • Quizzes/tests • Benchmark exams every quarter • Labs and lab reports

  5. Course Rigor • This is not an easy class. • This is a senior honors-level course. • Your child made it through Physics I. The rigor will be similar, but the difficulty with electricity is that we can’t see it. We all have experience with forces and motion from Physics I, but these concepts aren’t as intuitive.

  6. Communications • Email is best! • sreilly@norwinsd.org • As a traveling teacher, reaching me by phone is difficult (724-861-3805) • Skyward! • Your student can find me at: • Homeroom 230 • Office 205A

  7. BYOD • Norwin now has wireless and we can use the students’ personal devices in the classroom. • We have already started in this class – the students can use their personal devices to google information needed in class. • Students can use their devices as their calculator. • Do you parents want to try??? Get out your phone!
