  2. Session Overview • This session is designed to address research-based practices proven to improve student achievement focusing on Literacy and Numeracy • These practices will serve as a map to develop world class citizens

  4. Literacy and Numeracy is … Achievable for ALL CHILDREN!!!!

  5. What? • Instruction… • Vocabulary and Comprehension Focus • Foundations of Algebra and Automaticity Focus • Content and Pedagogy/ Strategies

  6. How? • Data Collection and Study • Various Assessments: DIBELS, LEAP, iLEAP, GEE, NAEP, etc. • Other assessments for ongoing progress monitoring: Core Reading/ Math series, GRADE, etc.

  7. How? • Working in TEAMS with principal and district leadership • Focusing on data and explicit instruction for individual students and groups of students • Coaches demonstrating effective lessons for classroom teachers • Interventionists providing small group instruction

  8. How? Professional Development • Data driven • Targeted • Job embedded • On-going (throughout the year)

  9. Extended Time for Literacy and Numeracy • Before and After School • Summer and Saturday School • Library Hours – People to Assist Students

  10. Response to Intervention (RTI) • Must be targeted • Programs – Caution!

  11. Making a Difference School Improvement Is PEOPLE Improvement And It is Always Unfinished!

  12. LEADERSHIP • The instructional leaderMUST be a part of grade level/team meetings and all planning and professional development • The instructional leaderMUSTfollow-up with feedback to teachers, interventionists, and coaches • Use of Literacy and Numeracy coaches

  13. How do we accomplish our goals? PARTNERSHIPS (Teamwork) Commitment to the belief that all children can learn to read and do mathematics successfully.

  14. How can we do this? • Eliminate the “Fluff” • Set Priorities • Use Time More Efficiently • Use Funds More Efficiently • Eliminate Some Activities/Electives
