In this chemistry unit, students will learn about the properties of matter, including its physical and chemical characteristics. They will also explore the different changes matter can undergo, such as physical changes and chemical changes. The unit includes hands-on activities and observations to deepen understanding.

Matter: • anything that has mass and volume • it’s all around us!
Properties • Characteristics & behaviours that describe matter • Can be physical or chemical
Observing Properties of matte • Qualitative observations: • Involves your 5 senses: • sight, touch, smell, sound, odor • Quantitative observations: • Involves specific measurements & numbers
Observing the Properties of Matter…Warm Up Activity • Materials for each group: • a white board & pen • A brown paper bag with a mystery item in it • Your group will: • Feel the item without looking at it first! Record what you feel • Look at the item without showing any other groups, make qualitative observations & quantitative if possible! • When instructed, pass the white board on to a new group… can they guess what you mystery matter was
Changes in matter can also also be:I. Physical andII. Chemical
PhysicalChange • Matter stays the same, but changes in: • Appearance!
It’s a physical change if • It changes shape or size • It dissolves.
It’s a physical change if... • It changes phase (freezes, boils, evaporates, condenses)
Examples • Frost forming over night from rain on a windshield • A puddle evaporates
Chemical Change • The matter changes to a different type of matter with: • new properties
It’s a chemical change if…. • It burns • Temperature changes without heating/cooling
It’s a chemical change if... • It bubbles (makes a gas)
It’s a chemical change if... • It changes color • It forms a precipitate (a new solid)
Examples of Chemical Changes • Burning Toast • Making scrambled eggs
In class assignment: • Observe the kitchen scene on your handout… • For each numbered box record: • i) what the item or situation is • ii) the type of change (physical or chemical) • iii) reasoning for choosing this type of change
