  2. How do scientists classify living things? • By appearance • By cell structure • By how they get nutrients and energy • By how they reproduce

  3. The FIVE KINGDOMS • Moneran • Protist • Fungus • Plant • Animal A Kingdom is the largest group into which scientists classify living things. Organisms in the same kingdom share more traits with each other than they do with any other organism in any other kingdom.

  4. MONERAN • No nucleus • One-celled • Get energy from sun or other organisms • Ex: Bacteria

  6. PROTIST • One – celled organisms • Have a nucleus • Examples: • algae, paramecium, and ameba more on algae

  13. FUNGUS What role do fungi play in forests? • All fungi get nutrients from living organisms or from organisms that are dead or decaying. more on fungi

  14. PLANTS & ANIMALS • Both are many-celled • Each get nutrients differently Plant Cells get nutrients from sunlight. Animal Cells get nutrients from other organisms.

  16. Dividing into Smaller Kingdoms • Kingdoms are very large and must be broken down.

  17. Genus • Genus: A group of similar species • Example: Lions and Tigers

  18. Species • A group of organisms of only one kind that can interbreed in nature. • Example: Lions can only breed with Lions

Test your knowledge! • Can you name each kingdom? • Why don’t scientists classify organisms by size, shape, or color? • Could you find a one-celled organism in the plant kingdom? • Can you name 4 types of fungi? • Do humans and Lions belong to the same species? • What kingdom do algae, ameba, and paramecium belong to? • Which kingdom has organisms that do not have a nucleus?
