  2. Purposes of Dance (think CAR) • Ceremonial: dances created or performed for rituals or celebrations. Examples: Native American and West African dance to celebrate harvest or dances associated with worship • Artistic Expression: dance created with the intent to express or communicate emotion, feelings and ideas. Examples: ballet, tap, modern dance

  3. Recreational: dancing for entertainment, to support recreational activities. Examples: ballroom, line dancing, aerobic dance and dance as a hobby

  4. Elements of Dance are: • SPACE • TIME • FORCE All elements work together to create a dance. Without one of these, you do not have a complete dance.

  5. TUESDAY

  6. Space-how a dancer uses the area around them • DIRECTION-forward, backward, right, left, up, down and diagonal • PATHWAY-straight, curved • LEVELS-high, middle, low • SHAPE-individual or group • FOCUS-where the viewer’s eye is drawn • SIZE-use in a given space or range of motion

  7. WEDNESDAY

  8. TIME-tempo or speed of dance • ACCENT-putting emphasis on a certain movement • RHYTHMIC PATTERN-order of beats in a dance; • DURATION-length of dance

  10. FORCE-energy behind the dance These are often explained with the use of opposites: • Heavy/light • Sharp/smooth • Tension/relaxation • Bound/flowing
