  1. Welcome 5th Graders and Parents I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you this year! I am confident this will be a very successful school year.

Ms. Staten • Attended the University of North Car0lina Wilmington • Graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Elementary Education and a minor in French • Enjoy staying active, cultivating a green thumb in my new home, and volunteering at my local church • Interesting Fact about me: I was a member of the Dance team in College and have been able to dance in many amazing dance programs including the School of North Carolina Dance Theatre here in Charlotte and The Jofferey Ballet in New York City. I also teach the Dance Connect 21 block here at Barnette!

Daily Schedule • 7:45-8:00 Morning Responsibilities • 8:00-8:45 Specials • 8:45-10:00 Math • 10:00-10:30 Recess • 10:30 Snack • 10:30-11:20 Integrated Unit • 11:20-12:20 Science • 12:20-12:55 Lunch • 1:00-1:45 Literacy Small Group • 1:45-2:05 Word Study • 2:05-2:45 Writing • * We will have Connect Block again later this year!

  5. Healthy snack • Your child’s working snack will be at 10:30. • Drink -- water only please. • Examples of healthy snacks include: • Granola bars • Cheese sticks • Gold fish • Fruits and vegetables • Chips ( Sun chips, wheat thins, pretzels)

  6. 5th Grade Curriculum • Literacy: Main Idea, Author’s Purpose, Drawing Conclusions, Inferences, Cause and Effect, Classify and Categorize, Sequence, Author’s Point of View • Math: 1st-Place Value, Multiplication/Division; 2nd-Geometry; 3rd-Fractions/Decimals; 4th-Measurement • Science: 1st –Weather/Climate; 2nd –Ecosystems; 3rd – Forces/Motion; 4th – Landforms • Social Studies: 1st – Geography; 2nd & 3rd- US History/Washington DC • Writing: Narratives, Opinion, Informative, Argumentative pieces

  7. Classroom Expectations • Classroom Rules: Be respectful, Be responsible, Be safe • Homework • Read at least 30 minutes every night. The only way to get better at reading is to read! • Math homework will be given on an almost daily basis Also look for: • B.E.S.T. Folders • S.T.A.R. (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) Binders • These are brand new this year to my class! They will keep track of data, grades, reading, goals, and much more!
